You know what Biden could do by executive order TODAY to immediately cut the black/white wealth gap in half? Cancel all student debt. Black women are the most impacted by the student debt crisis. Let alone follow through with a $2000 check as he had promised.

Changing our historical symbols on currency is important, yes. More important though are the material lives of black and brown and impoverished people who are LIVING today.

Both are possible, and if the 20 bill thing is happening, it doesn't mean cancelling all debt isn't. So, let's just celebrate this minor achievement.

Former First Lady of the United States. Now card-carrying member of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Can he actually cancel all student debt with just an executive order?

This is a good sign, but a lot of the progress black America has made post-Obama has been symbolic. I am glad we have had a black President, First Lady and Vice President, and Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill is an amazing move, but it is time for concrete action. Reparations are needed, and a serious paradigm shift to how slavery is taught in schools is needed as well. The events of 2016-present have really showed me just how many ignorant or willfully ignorant people in this country are about our racist history.

I think that first suggestion requires congress.

So this means nothing because he hasn't canceled student debt?

Do you know who Andrew Jackson is and what he did?

You sound like a person who wants to help black people as long as you get something in return.

I’m not sure but it’s unlikely given his administration has already made public their plan, which is to propose forgiving $10k of each students loan debt and to push it through the congressional approval process.

Biden is not necessarily for sure able to cancel student debt via executive order, which is why they are going through Congress for some of these things. Biden does not have power of the purse, the house does

$10k is still A LOT better than nothing. I hope they push it through very soon. Has anyone in the administration said anything about it since his Inauguration?

Lololol 😆😂 “Power of the purse” is my new favorite saying! I must now find ways to inject this into my common dialogue.

Yeah but the point is that how much of an achievement is this vs. an appeasement of the liberal Democrats? It makes them feel happy and not racist but doesn’t materially change conditions. Not saying it isn’t a cool thing to do, but I think we can’t really compare these achievements. One is a matter of policy, the other (this one) a matter of state.

I think it’s fine to both celebrate and go “no honey you’re not getting off that easily.” I don’t think OP is *against* this on principle, but more that may we aren’t going to give you big props for the bare minimum when the perfectly reasonable is still outstanding. But I understand people have different approaches to their personal politics :)

as for me, yay! But also I’m broke af so while this is cool and we love celebrating an actual American hero instead of a genocidal monster...I’d also like some other monetary news coming out of the Fed that will help me more lolol and there’s a kind of sus question about the state using the likeness of someone brutally attacked by the state for patriotic purposes but I think that’s more just itching for a fight if you want one. I just want my money lmao
