COVID vaccine to be offered to every adult in the UK by Autumn

Every adult will have been offered the coronavirus vaccine by autumn, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said.

The cabinet minister made the announcement as he told Sky News more than 200,000 people are currently getting a COVID-19 jab every day and the government is on course to reach its target of two million vaccinations a week.

But speaking on Sophy Ridge On Sunday, the health secretary said the current pressure on the NHS was "very bad" and repeated the need for people to follow lockdown rules and stay at home, warning "we can't let up" just because coronavirus injections are being rolled out.

The health secretary told the BBC's Andrew Marr that "absolutely we're going to offer the vaccine to everybody" by autumn.

"We've got over 350 million doses on order," he said, "they're not all here yet, and we're rolling them out as fast as they get delivered."

Mr Hancock also spoke about enforcement of lockdown rules, saying he "absolutely" backed the police in strictly applying the law when it comes to COVID-19 restrictions, after two women were fined for driving five miles for a country walk, warning that "every flex can be fatal".

He told Ridge the government was set to meet its goal of vaccinating more than 13 million of the over-70s and the most vulnerable by mid-February - a target that requires two million jabs to be carried out a week.

Mr Hancock said: "Yes we're on course. The rate limiting factor at the moment is supply but that's increasing.

"I'm very glad to say that at the moment we're running at over 200,000 people being vaccinated every day.

"We've now vaccinated around one third of the over-80s in this country so we're making significant progress but there's still further expansion to go.

"This week we're opening mass vaccination centres. Big sites for instance at Epsom racecourse, there's seven going live this week with more to come next week where we will get through very large numbers of people."

Americans need to stop complaining tbh. I don't get the were vaccinating too slow tbh

The US has among the very highest vaccination rates in the world. I'm not even talking total number I'm talking as a % of population

Most of the countries in top 20 are just cracking 1% now the US already passed 2% days ago.

The US is doing way better than almost everyone. I think Israel and Bahrain were the only 2 Countries ahead of the US last time I checked in terms of percentage vaccinated

Edit: about getting it again, I don't think the vaccine does anything ur immune system doesn't already do on its own if u already got it does it? But correct me if I'm mistaken

These promises are often a mess. The Lebanese gov promised us 2 million doses by February but instead we're getting 60k and probably after feb lol

The problems is everyone including politicians themselves always forget about the logistics of stuff. It's not just wanting something to happen and throwing money at it, there's a lot of careful planning and organizing required

Also stuff they can't control such as if the manufacturer has delays in production or when they send it

Some provinces in my country have been criticized for being too slow in administering the shots we did have on hand... a criticism I share because although I understand planning this stuff has complicated logistics involved, they knew for months and months vaccines were coming and had time to workout a plan it's not like this was a last minute thing they had to scramble for so what's the excuse for poor planning? :crossed:

Lol I'm not complaining. We are starting our phase 2 tomorrow, being that Police officers and I forgot hat other category can go get vaccinated.

And I heard that the covid shot might end up being like the flu shot, that you might need to get it every year. Not entirely sure how that is.

Does ur federal government control vaccinations and administration?

Here in Canada they did the contracts and distribute to provinces but then everything else is managed by the Provinces including who is priority group, where the shots are given, where they are stored etc

Yeah the UK Governments handled the distribution of it but the Scottish Government handled the administration of it

I heard that too because it mutates and then the shot needs updates like for the regular flu. But if that's what u meant the vaccine as of now is probably not gonna protect u anymore than ur immune system by already being exposed to it as they haven't been updating much of anything in it yet. But if u get it later in the year perhaps cuz I know some companies were looking into tweeking it to include more of the proteins from mutated strains in UK and South Africa

And I can understand why they might be a phase 2 priority group as they deal with a lot of ppl daily

Like after the elderly and front line healthcare workers... Public sector workers that deal with a lot of ppl daily would make sense to me. Grocery store workers as well as if a another shutdown is necessary they still have to work
