Thai rescuer gives CPR to baby elephant hit by motorbike

Mana Srivate told Reuters news agency he had performed dozens of resuscitation attempts in his career - but never before on an elephant.

In a video that went viral online he is seen giving two-handed compressions to the elephant lying on its side in the middle of a dark road. It had been trying to cross a road with a group of wild pachyderms in the eastern Thai province of Chanthaburi.

In the video, Mr Mana's colleagues are also seen treating the motorcycle rider, who survived the crash without serious injuries.

“It’s my instinct to save lives, but I was worried the whole time because I can hear the mother and other elephants calling for the baby,” Mana said.

Afterwards, both the rider and elephant recovered and neither had serious injuries.

Despite having dealt with dozens of road traffic accidents involving humans, Mana said the elephant was the only one of his CPR recipients that had revived.

Yikes. Glad both are ok but what he did was it potentially dangerous?

 

An Elephant doesn't know what CPR is and if they failed to sense he was trying to help, they just see an injured baby elephant from their pack and a human compressing it... These elephants might draw the wrong conclusion and attack, they are very protective of their young

How do you even give an elephant CPR?  Glad both are safe though
