Mom influencer Katie Sorensen, who ran the (recently deactivated) Instagram account @MotherhoodEssentials, went viral last week after posting two videos on her page detailing an alleged attempting kidnapping at a Michaels Craft Store in Petaluma, CA.

“My kids were the target of an attempted kidnap,” she said, speaking directly to camera, describing bringing her four-year-old son and one-year-old daughter in a double stroller to a store. Sorensen claims a Latinx couple followed her into the store; she said she noticed the man looked at her in the parking lot. She told local Fox News outlet KTVU that she heard them “talking about the features of my children,” to someone on the phone. “But I was totally paralyzed with fear,” she said. “I saw these people, they didn’t look necessarily clean-cut. I felt uncomfortable around them, and instead of making them uncomfortable with my discomfort, I chose to remain in my discomfort.”

Though the couple Sorensen described did exist, her story didn’t appear to hold up. Petaluma police located the couple and found that “inconsistencies between the two accounts of the incident need[ed] to be resolved before criminal charges can be considered,” investigators told BuzzFeed. On Thursday night, police officially reported that they found no evidence a crime was committed.

Though the names of the couple involved have not been made public, their photo was released by police and has already been making rounds of “#savethechildren” child trafficking conspiracy theory page. A family member of the couple told BuzzFeed they were victims of racist profiling. “Somewhere in her mind she sincerely misconstrued this ‘brown’ couple innocently shopping at a craft store and discussing their own grandchildren as activity that was somehow threatening to her family,” the family member said.

Petaluma Police also released a statement saying that Sorensen included details of the incident in her viral videos that she did not include in her initial police report that could constitute a crime: specifically, that the man in the couple approached her children’s stroller and reached for it in the parking lot. “To date, the investigation has produced no evidence or witnesses corroborating the account provided by the reporting party,” a police statement read. “Evidence gathered has served to support the account provided by the couple from the store.”

This incident is traumatizing for both parties. There's no evidence in the issue and i cannot comment who is at fault. But the mere fact that there will be more sympathizers for this woman than the couple who are both equally innocent right now is sad.

I can only say that if it was a white couple commenting on the features of someone else's child in the parking lot, this would not have happened.

On the other hand, kids do go missing and kidnapping does occur but i doubt it happens in broad daylight in a parking lot.

What is the punishment for a false accusation vs. Someone whose face and reputation got tainted

I wish they could press charges against her tbh

i don’t think that would be necessary or ideal.

she didn’t expose details about this couple, if she had’ve gotten ahold of their personal information, and having a public platform exposing them, even through pics/videos, this would be solid enough for the couple to press charges against this woman. she didn’t approach the couple nor attack them. the couple remain confidential so really they’re safe, no damage has been done except for obviously the hurt they must feel about the accusation.

ideally, whilst this may seem racially motivated, there’s also a chance it wasn’t. not defending the woman at all, but there’s no evidence of this being racially motivated either. let’s just keep the couple in our thoughts, as i couldn’t imagine how upset they must feel after having such a heavy accusation out on their shoulders.

The couple does not remain confidential because in the OP it states their photo was released and spread with the hashtag “save the children” regardless of if she released their image. If they did remain confidential I would agree no real harm done, no charges.

i mucked up on that part so i’ll correct myself, however the woman didn’t release the photo. the police did:

“their photo was released by police and has already been making rounds of “#savethechildren” child trafficking conspiracy theory page.”

if anyone is at fault here it’s definitely the police in this situation, and that conspiracy page that reposted the picture without doing their research on the situation. i completely understand where you’re coming from, we are on the same page but we shouldn’t blame the woman for this.

This racist hag. Another Karen who was threatened by people that weren't white. I hope she re-activates so I can drag her for the trash she is. She knew what she was doing, and she got her 15 minutes.
