A R T P O P 545
I hate when people like Sia try to turn other people's conditions a form of entertainment. This would be much more aithentic if it was written, produced and acted by autistic talent.

This is like she would make film about person without leg and you would tell her to just find actor who doesn't have one of limb. I see your point. I mentioned Dustin Hoffman played the part of an autistic person in the movie Rain Man. He did a lot of research to make sure his portrayal was authentic. Because of his performance the viewing public gained understanding and compassion for people with autism. Great actors can do that, perhaps better than someone who actually is autistic. The post I was referring to was about how people with disabilities should be given every consideration for jobs. I agree with that. So there are pros and cons of who to choose to play the part in a movie. I live outside the space time continuum.

When movies are made to supposedly empower them and show a "good" image of them, you'd except said movies to practically empower them by giving them the opportunities they lack. Instead they hire people who do not fit the role and who can get cast in 500 other movies and so they take away such opportunities from people who need them. This times infinity! Hollywood has been predominantly rich, white and straight for a very long time. Yes, I know that and you didn't get my point. Of course black, gay, trans, etc. people should get these jobs if they have the talent to do those characters. But I mean that suddenly Twitter culture is all about "Only gay people should be playing gay characters, stop casting straights!" or the same with Trans, that they strictly want a trans person to play a trans character. It's gonna be very random but also how social media went MAD when Halle Bailey was casted as Ariel and people wanted a ginger girl to play it simply because that's how they're used to seeing the animated character. Oriane 21,135
So they complain because they didn't get cast after replying to a tweet? Ok, I didn't know castings were done by replying to tweets these days. The only GGD member who can read / Credits to Celloo Deng for the profile pic! JanStan 574
Twitter SJWs: Drag ha to the pits of hell!!! Sia: Claps back and explains that the dragging was unfair and unjustified Twitter SJWs: Gosh she didn’t have to be rude about it. Drag ha for defending herself! Some people are just too dumb to even know that they’re dumb. Trump supporter teas.

This is just acting and I don't get why suddenly they want actual trans people to portray trans characters, gay people to portray gay characters and so on. I guess it wasn't the best way to respond to criticism but haven't read the whole thing or watched the movie yet, we'll see. When you have someone like Jared Leto playing a trans woman then accepting an Oscar for said role with a full beard presenting as male...the world see that being a trans woman is just a man performing as one. It's more so about having the correct gender portrayed hence why any male should be allowed to play a gay role.

Again, it isn't sudden and it isn't Twitter culture. You didn't call it twitter culture in the first place. Casting a cis actor to play a trans character is a giant slap in the face to underrepresented talent from those demographics. It wouldn't be an issue if people were represented properly but they aren't.
Gagaloo911 12,959
Oh look, another day, another case of people trying to cancel someone over anything they can find. It's honestly so old at this point. People really have nothing better to do but complain and go off on social media due to their own lame lives that nothing exciting happens in. PEZ 6,248
"Maybe you’re just a bad actor" was a lousy way for her to respond. I can understand her being frustrated and disappointed that she's encountering critique to her labor of love, but put your phone down at that point and hand it off to your team, before you dig a deeper hole for yourself. Or come back and apologize for that particular tweet to save face. Not sure how I feel yet about the casting. I'm diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum too and there's no way I'd be able to handle a typical movie shoot, I'd be waaaay overstimulated and nerve-wracked and exhausted by it. So I can sorta sympathize with both the "please cast those who are part of and represent us" side and the "it's hard to get someone in the same circumstances as my friend to fulfill that demanding of a role" argument. Idk, I'll have to mull over it some more. ⚡🐲
Super 1,039
while I think representation is important I hate the idea of only casting autistic people or whatever just for the sake of it, so I don’t really think she’s wrong

Cameltoe Chariot 15,252
Isn't most of the movie a musical though, in which Maddie (the lead actress) dances and performs in a surrealist world? It was a very demanding role that even a non-autistic actor would struggle with. Not siding with anyone here, just looking at facts and from what it sounds like MOST people haven't even watched the trailer for the movie. At what point do we draw the line here, anyway? Are we arguing that it's okay for someone with aspergers to take on this role and act as an autistic person who is non-verbal? There was a time when it was deemed appropriate if anyone in the LGBTQ+ community played a trans role but now that's a no-go. Would we not be having this same conversation 10/15 years down the road after more progression is made that it was offensive giving the role to someone who isn't that exact form of autism? Sia is a recovering addict with severe mental health issues. She's a complicated, messy artist who is trying to communicate something to the world about someone she knows and loves. Her intense reactions are raw and real, and it's sad seeing how we as humans literally get off on devouring each other. It's insane to me that some random person on twitter can tweet that she could've "easily" been in the role and the rest of the internet rallies around her like some injustice occurred... it's so gross and weird. Sia has clawed her way to success despite so many traumas and hardships and now we're using that success as an excuse to condemn her.
