I don't get how people think it is remotely good for the community the spreading of the narrative that gay actors should play gay characters. That's not what acting is about. And in the long term that really can damage the opportunities for gay actors. Imagine if straights characters would only be played by straight actors? Gays are the minority, which means gays actors will not have a chance to have a career. In the long term, that ideia will only damage the lgbtq+ community, but go off I guess.

The idea of “gay actor = gay role” sets a really problematic precedence if we take it as a rule of thumb.

No but she's an actress isn't she? I find it a bit tiring when people keep saying so and so cannot play this because she's not xyz, I think that only applies if it's completely delusional for example, a caucasian to play Jasmine in Aladdin, yes, be outraged!!!! Because it makes no sense at all for someone who doesn't have the look to play her. But to pinpoint each little detail is completely preposterous. So now, you have to be the exact same person than the character you play, so that should include the age. And what if a transman wants to play a cis man one day and completely passes as a man? Well the answer is that everyone would cheer because they are hypocrites, it's only good when there are certain criterias that you (general you) accept. That's not art, let actors play characters different than them

Well i can understand that the lgbt+ community would love to see a gay cheracter playad by a gay actress and nobody is vilifieng her some people here just feel like selena is the right person for this role and there is nothing wrong with that

Silvia herself is the executive producer of the movie  She obviously had a say in casting Selena, considering she's selling the rights to her unpublished memoir to the company.

I'm not trying to shade or be snarky, just looking to be educated since I couldn't find anything recent. Isn't she a member of Hillsong Church? With being a member of an anti-LGBT church, it sits weird she would take on this role. Did she only attend while with Bieber? Edited to add: I know people can change their minds, churches, relationships, etc. With the latest information being roughly two years old, I truly want to know. It's definitely not my business, but again, sits weird if that's all still happening.

(I also try to keep in mind that someone can be within the LGBT+ community and not be out, so I don't like the narrative of dunking on actors for "not being gay enough" for a role.)
