This is more of a psychological thriller

The Baby (1973):

Social worker Ann Gentry is fascinated by the case of Mrs Wadsworth and her fully-grown son who has the mind and behaviour of a baby. Her interest fast becomes obsession and leads to a bizarre and violent conclusion.

Full movie below:

The ending is both sweet and sad at the same time

I love all these films, great taste!

Have you seen Kiss of the Damned, Alone, Troll Hunter, Ouija: Origin of Evil (surprisingly good for a Ouija movie), Quarantine and Quarantine 2, Hostile - 2018 (this one was just okay, imo, but still worth a watch), Better Watch Out, Grave Encounters is decent too.

I haven't seen these yet but they're on my watch list: The Afflicted, Noroi: The Curse, REC, The Poughkeepsie Tapes, Lake Mungo.

Love this thread!  I'm sure some of my answers you've seen or are repeated in the thread but, hey, fellow horror lovers unite!

Some recent ones I love are:
It Follows (2015)
Don't Breath (2016)
The Lighthouse (2019)
Swallow (2019)
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Midsommar (2016)
Crimson Peak (2015)
The Witch (2016)
The Wind (2019)
mother! (2017)
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

Some eclectic films from the Criterion Collection (a silly bougie film collection but nonetheless legit and has some good finds):
The Brood (1979)
Don't Look Now (1973)
Eyes Without a Face (1960)
Kwaidan (1965)
Scanners (1981)

Have also been re-watching the Hellraiser series and it may be one of my favorites.  Also the Fly series is pretty great (the originals and remakes).

Very excited for David Cronenberg's son's film, Possessor that is available now, too.

The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Bly Manor is amazing and not boring. I binged in two days. Definitely not as scary as Hill House but the storytelling is spectacular and the writing and acting is beautiful. Definitely a must see.

As for movies my faves are:

As Above So Below

Cabin in the Woods

Hellhouse LLC

The Others

The Uninvited

Oculus

I think for people going into the show expecting horror to the extent of hill house it may have been a bit underwhelming. To be honest, going into the show I had a hunch that it was gonna have less emphasis on scares so I was a bit sad about that. However by the end of the show, I was completely overwhelmed by tears and emotion and realized that I cared far more about the love stories between the characters than whether I thought the show delivered enough scares. I still think about Bly Manor to this day, because the emotional depth it delivered to the audience was something I haven't ever experienced from a show, let alone a horror series. What they achieved is nothing less than a gothic/romance/horror masterpiece.

While you can say the show wasn't particularly scary, "boring" is hardly ever a word I'd consider while talking about the show.

Totally agree with this review. In fact, I watched Bly Manor first. Then, I read a lot of backlash against it, compared to the 1rst season. Teased and curious I subsequently watched Hill House. Storywise, HH is more complex and 'scary' than BM for sure but I couldn't really relate to the characters. Don't know why exactely, partly bc I wasn't concerned by their specific psychological problems. I also felt the constant time jumps and the lack of young/old actors resemblance as a mood breaker (Henry Thomas = Timothy Hutton... whaaaat ?). Having read Shirley Jackson book and being a fan of Robert Wise 1963 movie didn't help either.

Like you @Quasi I've been really moved to tears by the end of Bly Manor... Yes, the long takes in HH_E06 are technically impressive but to me, the highlight of this first season is Victoria Pedretti. And the fact she was cast as lead actress in BM made perfect sense.

Late to the party but I got a diamond heart

I didn't see Hill actually, so I didn't know what to expect, we watched the trailer and were ok horror, let's try.. so I guess they just sold it to us the wrong way?

Yeah their marketing was more about the horror aspects of the show because that's what really sold the first season. So it's understandable why people would be slightly disappointed.

I think Hill House might be more up your alley. There are more scenes that are genuinely scary. Less emphasis on the relationships between characters and more focused on the house's effect on this one family. One scene in particular is notorious for making people **** themselves and once you get to it, you'll see why.
