true but he will still be forced out. The military will be forced to remove him

unless he somehow organizes a private militia, his supporters are close enough to this already by intimidating voters at voting locations

Can someone explain this part, “The president’s team is also prepared to present mail-in ballots counted after Nov. 3 as illegitimate.”

What team? The White House team? And if so, shouldn’t they be an unbiased “team” that follows the law regardless of who is president?

The votes still need to be counted though.

The real civil unrest will come after a winner is officially declared because no matter who wins, the other side will be angry.

I agree but if Trump declares himself winner before anything is official there is no chance his base is going to listen to ANYONE other than him even after all the votes are counted and even if he isn't the actual winner

the military heavily supports him tho........ like they're part of his cult....... he was the one sending them into cities across country just months ago to violently arrest and attack protesters for no reason and they blindly followed him?

It doesnt matter though, the military will be forced to remove him. This is what the law says. But the military and Trump dont really have a good relationship.

why not announce it all at once?

States have different rules when it comes to counting mailed-in ballots. For example, Pennsylvania (arguably the most critical state) does not allow early votes to be processed until Election Day. It becomes physically impossible to announce the results  on the same day because there’s no way they can have the results.

Is there a possibility then that the winner won't be announced that evening? I was intending to stay up until stupid o'clock to watch (I'm in the UK) are they projecting for it to take a few days for votes to be finalised or?

It depends on the state of the race, Florida is a state that counts their mail in ballots before a election day, so when their polls close we'll have all of florida's vote immediately. If Trump loses Florida, it's game over for him, And we'll know the night of 8pm est.

Ah I see ok, thanks! I'll get the wine in then and stay up and watch.

This is why I hope Biden wins Florida. As typical of Florida, it’s down to the wire, but with Biden being slightly favored. Florida counts their ballots very quickly, and they are one of the first states to have their polls close, so we will know early who gets Florida. If Biden gets Florida on election night, the election will be essentially over: There is no viable path to victory for Trump should Florida turn blue.

Biden is favored to win Florida; voting is higher in 2020 compared to 2016 (which tends to favor Democrats), and the highest quality polls show, on average, about a 3% edge for Biden. For more discussion, see https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/30/us/politics/who-will-win-florida-polls.html

White house staff are picked by the President, in this case Trump disregards the law.

It depends on which states which candidates are ahead in. A few states in the rust belt will probably take at least another day or two to determine a winner. If Biden manages to win either Arizona, Florida, Georgia or North Carolina he's gonna be called the winner because it wont matter at that point. But if he loses all of those states then it'll come down to Pennsylvania, which doesnt start counting the mail in ballots until election day.

It means that Trump's legal team (not the DoJ) will try to argue to the courts that ballots, even though are submitted on/before the election are invalid because they weren't able to count them on the election night. We saw this in 2000 where the supreme court handed Bush the presidency because they wouldnt let Florida finish counting legitimate ballots when Gore was projected to win.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up about FL. Miami-Dade and Broward county Democrats are underperforming so far. For Biden to win he’s gonna need a great turnout on Election Day and have a greater chunk of independents go his way. Not impossible but it’s also not secured.
