PunkTheFunk 125,719
A powerful earthquake has struck off Turkey's Aegean coast and north of the Greek island of Samos, destroying homes and killing at least 22 people. The 7.0 magnitude tremor was centred off Turkey's Izmir province, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. Turkey put the magnitude lower, at 6.6, saying 20 people had died and 786 were injured in the province of Izmir. On Samos, two teenagers were killed. The shallow tremor triggered a mini-tsunami that flooded Izmir and Samos. The authorities in Izmir, the provincial capital, are now setting up a tent area to house about 2,000 people overnight, amid fears that more buildings could collapse. The authorities said that 70 people had been rescued from under the rubble. Rescuers continued to dig through concrete blocks after darkness fell, hoping to find more survivors. The USGS said the quake - which was felt as far away as Athens and Istanbul - struck at a depth of 10km (six miles), although Turkish officials said it was 16km below ground. Turkey and Greece both sit on fault lines and earthquakes are common. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-54749509

dit 46,738
hope everyone is ok the Aegean area is notorious for having high potential for earthquakes. there's always big ones in the region every few years. Istanbul was completely destroyed by one like a decade or two ago. Hope it doesn't get to that ever again

palma 8,909
It is horrifying to wake up to bad news every single day. I live in Istanbul which is fairly away from Izmir but it was a very scary experience. I just hope there are not many that are in an unsalvageable position. The winter is just around the corner and I don't want to imagine how would it feel to be homeless... Let this be a warning by Nature to both sides of the Aegean since as exemplified here, if something bad happens, it happens to either of us. The Greco-Turkish rivalry is like two sisters sharing the same room and fighting night and day... 1 hour ago, dit said: hope everyone is ok the Aegean area is notorious for having high potential for earthquakes. there's always big ones in the region every few years. Istanbul was completely destroyed by one like a decade or two ago. Hope it doesn't get to that ever again That would be a bit of an overstatement. I believe you're referring to 1999 Earthquake. It caused some major damage in some districts of Istanbul but some cities to the east took the biggest blow. Ever since we've been expecting another major earthquake in the city center and I believe that will destroy Istanbul On an unrelated note, going back to what I said, months after the 1999 Earthquake, an earthquake of similar magnitude hit Athens this time and Turkey and Greece shocked the world as both countries rushed to help each other out. I hope it'll repeat this time as I desperately need peace. My landlady in Greece was depressed due to a possibility that Erdogan will provoke a war and her son will be drafted into the army... Oh and that would be Izmit actually. Two different cities, similar names. Izmir is nevertheless located in the center of a dangerous seismic zone. Is there some reason my LG7 isn't here? Has she died or something?
