Evanescence are a good way to ease in, as they have pop melodies and its not as hard and intense as many rock sounds. But they're not metal.

Yes, try Evanescence.  Some consider them to be metal.  But rock or metal, they are Gothic and wonderful.

Also try Nightwish.

This is Gothic and beautiful.  The actors in the MV are actually the band members.

A Led Zeppelin classic, Kashmir. The instruments are hugely effective for this song's success, though maybe not technically metal.

Also love the lead guitar in Thunderstruck. I'm not hung up on genre classification, so don't assume its metal.

I am a metalhead, I've always been a metal head.   I'm one of the "old" ones here; Hard Rock and Metal have been the soundtrack of my life.   I like most every sub-genre, except not a big fan of the 80's glam "metal" era, which I personally don't consider metal at all.  However, that stuff is clearly the most pop oriented of all the forms and a great starting point for someone new to rock and metal in general.    Also Early Van Halen is very pop oriented and yet very good.   Worth checking out.

My number one hard rock/metal band, no contest, is a band that should have been infinitely more popular than they have been.   They never quite fit exactly into a particular category so never were able to really get radio on board except in spurts.   However, if you want excellent musicianship, steller vocals and harmonies, and groove, it doesn't get any better IMO than Kings X.

Their earlier stuff from the 80's is more the hard rock side of the equation, when they hit the 90's they started getting heavier and made my personal favorite album, Dogman.  This album is heavier than **** but still melodic. My wife has been deaf since birth, but she can tell when I'm playing Dogman on my main stereo because **** starts falling off counters lol.

Also, Dug Pinnick, the lead singer and bass player, is gay.   In their early history some of their songs had an underlying christian theme although they were never explicitly a christian band, but around the Dogman era Dug got disillusioned with the church and the treatment he received from it, and their music got much darker in theme.

None more Heavy

I’ll forever be in love with Nightwish. Their new album is also amazing. I don’t get why they’re not as popular outside of Europe, they’re huge there.

OP, listen to Nightwish! The best symphonic metal band ever. Proof:

Not 2 years ago I despised Metal with every fiber of my being, but Poppy and BABYMETAL actually made me enjoy it. To get into heavier sounds in general, I'd suggest (in this very order):

Hard Feelings by Poppy

XS by Rina Sawayama

Am I A Girl by Poppy

Play Destroy by Poppy & Grimes

STFU! by Rina Sawayama

Doki Doki Morning by BABYMETAL

Scary Mask by Poppy & Fever 333

X by Poppy

Iine by BABYMETAL ( the first letter is a capital i, not lowercase L :poot: )

Bite Your Teeth by Poppy

BLOODMONEY by Poppy

Bleep Bloop By Poppy

BABYMETAL DEATH by BABYMETAL

Ew, David!

Schwerk

Metal is such a broad genre that evolved quickly so there's tons to choose from.

Personally I can appreciate symphonic metal but I never listen to is because it gets on my nerves. I prefer to let go and dance to metal. My pogo days are over, now I just dance like I would to pop or club music, I dance like I feel and don't give a sh... what people think. Because I've found some seem to be allergic to dancing to metal.

Marilyn Manson and Korn were my way in and funnily enough Limp Bizkit, all music with a nice buildup and energy release.

These days I'm more into the old school stuff by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Saxon, Budgie. It's often more hardrock than metal. I'm not too familiar with the genres I just explore playlists to find new things I like.
