Facebook was responsible for 94% of the 69 million child sex abuse images reported by US technology companies last year.

The figures emerged as seven countries, including the UK, published a statement on Sunday warning of the impact of end-to-end encryption on public safety online.

Facebook has previously announced plans to fully encrypt communications in its Messenger app, as well as its Instagram Direct service - on top of WhatsApp, which is already encrypted - meaning no one apart from the sender and recipient can read or modify messages.

The social media site said the changes are designed to improve user privacy on all of its platforms.

But law enforcement agencies fear the move will have a devastating impact on their ability to target paedophiles and protect children online.

Some 16.9 million referrals were made by US tech firms to the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) last year, including 69 million images of children being abused - up 50% on the previous year.

Some 94% of the reports, which include the worst category of images, came from Facebook, Home Office officials said.

But the National Crime Agency (NCA) has warned the number could drop to zero if Facebook presses ahead with end-to-end encryption.

Robert Jones, the NCA director responsible for tackling child sexual abuse, said of the plan: "The lights go out, the door gets slammed, and we lose all of that insight. It is as simple as that.

This is very terrible but end to end encryption is NOT a threat to anybody's safety any more than any form of privacy is. This is fear mongering.

I hate to hear this, it makes me ashamed for humanity. Facebook feels like humanity, with how popular and important everyone in society treats it. I hate facebook, personally.

The future's uncertain and the end is always near.

I don't even know why a lot of people still in there. It is like it's mandatory to have one cos people would ask you about it in social gathering. "Oh, what's your fb? May I add you?"

I kid of wonder if these stats might be skewed by reporting, as it could be the fact that other services have a harder time finding it or report it less. Either way, fb needs to be shutdown.

And they pretty much ruined Tumblr. Facebook has always been the worst social media to use.

Facebook it's made by the people, like it or not. Also FB has helped lots of people to socialize, comunicate, grow their business, etc. So, no, shutting down a platform as big as that is not a solution. You guys have to know that there's bad people in every place, it doesn't matter how safe you want to be..they'll find their way to do their evil stuff to other people.

Even if they could see a pedophile’s PMs, they would find another way to share that content.

Tumblr banned pr0n and nudes of all kinds even if arty ones, (videos, photos and drawing/panting), because someone reported pedophiles are also posting child pr0n in there.

Tumblr used to be the home for many cam models, but then they ended up banning any type of p***. Imo Twitter and Facebook should do the same, it’s sad how accessible it is.
