One of the greatest albums of all time - Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 turned 31 on 19th September!

Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 is the follow-up to her breakthrough third album, Control, which was a pop hit and turned Janet into a superstar. But Janet, along with producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, decided to create Rhythm Nation as a concept album used to address social issues such as substance abuse and racism, while still providing love songs and dance tracks. The significance of the title is that “Rhythm Nation” is a socially conscious and inclusive nation, while “1814” is related to the year “The Star-Spangled Banner” was created. Rhythm Nation was Janet’s second consecutive album to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 and would go on to be certified six times platinum in the US and sell more than 12 million copies worldwide. The album is historic in several ways, being the only one to feature seven top-five pop singles and contain three number one pop singles in three separate calendar years—"Miss You Much" (1989), “Black Cat” and “Escapade” (1990), and “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” (1991). “Alright” also reached #1 on the US Dance Club Songs chart and “Come Back To Me” hit #1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart. Rhythm Nation is also one of nine albums to produce at least four number one singles. The album is also featured on Rolling Stone’s list of The Greatest 500 Albums of All Time.

"She created a blueprint that hundreds of thousands of artists have followed, from Britney Spears to Ciara to Lady Gaga. Rhythm Nation 1814 was the album that revolutionized her career and the pop landscape. It demonstrated that black women needn't be second to anyone. But it wasn't individualistic."

If it was released in 1814 shouldn’t it be 206 years old?
:enigma:

The usage of the number "1814" represents the year the national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written. Rolling Stone emphasized the core concept is further explored in the album's opening pledge (the first track of the recording), which states: "We are a nation with no geographic boundaries, bound together through our beliefs. We are like-minded individuals, sharing a common vision, pushing toward a world rid of color-lines."

Let's not try to use humor, all the time :)

This album was such a monumental moment in music history. She broke record after record, scored hit after hit and became one of the most influential female artists to date (which started with Control but she solidified that with this album). And above all that it’s a freaking good album from start to finish:giveup: She did THAT:heart:

What you want Lady Gaga🥂 What you want with Christina🥂

Blown Away

This album... This album is a goddamn masterpiece. Perfect from start to finish, filled with bop after bop after bop. The way she managed to put such a message in such dance-friendly songs is masterful. There truly isn't a bad song on this album. She f*cking served with this album, showing the girlies she was there to stay.

My faves are Rhythm Nation, Come Back To Me, Black Cat and Someday Is Tonight.

They shipped it, but it got shipped back

Incredible article. Love when a writer really knows, respects, and understands the full oeuvre and scope of an era when discussing art from it. I especially loved how he placed the achievements of Janet and Madonna next to one another not as a means of putting them as rivals, but to highlight what he sees as a criminal lack of appreciation for Janet’s landmark works.
