Barbados wants to get rid of Queen Elizabeth and become a republic in 2021.

Barbados has announced its intention to become a republic and remove Britain's Queen Elizabeth as head of state by November next year.

 

Governor-General Dame Sandra said the administration of Prime Minister Mia Mottley, will take the "next logical step" to make Barbados into a republic in time for the country's 55th anniversary of independence in November 2021.

 

The governor general is duty-bound to deliver the speech prepared by the political administration.

In 1998, a Barbados constitutional review commission recommended republican status and in 2015, then Prime Minister, Freundel Stuart said his administration would have implemented the recommendation.

Most Caribbean Community (CARICOM) states maintained formal links with the British monarchy after gaining their independence.

If Barbados goes through with its plans, it will join Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana as members of CARICOM's 'Big Four' to sever ties with the monarchy.

Good because having stupid presidents is a thing too.

People believe a democratic chosen president means a lot but those candidates already are the elite, so who cares. It doesnt matter who is head of state; head of government is practical thing.

It's probably like Canada. She is our Queen as well since we are in the Commonwealth but there's no real influence actually exerted

 

The only power the Queen truly has even in Britain is to refuse to sign a bill into law if she disagreed with it that strongly and chose to do so because for a law to pass she must give the final signature after it's gone thru Government/Parliament (but to my knowledge she has never refused a bill and probably never will to not upset Government who could then try to get rid of their royal status/relevant existence)

 

But in Countries under the Commonwealth she doesn't even have that power because the "Governor General" in Parliament symbolically represents the Queen in signing bills and we have our own to sign the bills

 

So it's literally just symbolic and a tradition. It doesn't actually mean anything
