I wouldn't make a generality out of it, as she has shown support towards fellow contemporary artists repeatedly.

I mean they are her words. But it was also in the begining of her career. She was still praising Madonna as the nicest person in the music industry back then.

So the exact quote is "It's been my experience in the industry that I have connected on a much deeper level with the most iconic and legendary people that I have admired, and have not connected with any of my contemporaries".

Like I suspected, this doesn't equal to her saying she doesn't like her contemporaries at all. She can support Taylor Swift or Ariana and be a fan of their work without necessarily developing a personal relationship the way she did with Elton, for instance. Also, like you said, that was in 2009, very early in her career so I'm pretty sure her stance and experience have changed since. She was very much the outsider back then.

I edited my post when I realized there was more. It was 2009, she was the weird new kid in the class. I'm sure she made some friends since.
