Labradoodle study reveals dogs are actually mostly poodle

Researchers have examined the genetics of the Australian labradoodle, revealing that the dogs are mostly poodle.

“We were surprised to see that it was really quite dramatic,” said Dr Elaine Ostrander, a co-author of the research from the National Human Genome Research Institute in the US.

In recent years there has been a boom in crosses between different breeds, leading to a plethora of Seussian-sounding dogs, from schnoodles (a cross between a schnauzer and poodle) to morkies (a cross between a maltese and yorkshire terrier).

Ostrander and colleagues sought to unpick how new breeds are developed by looking at the Australian labradoodle. Writing in the journal Plos Genetics, the team report how they compared the DNA sequence at more than 150,000 random positions in the genomes of Australian labradoodles with the same positions in the genomes of labrador retrievers and standard, miniature and toy poodles.

They also looked at these positions in English cocker spaniels, American cocker spaniels and Irish water spaniels, as well as first-generation crosses between labradors and standard poodles.

The results revealed that, as expected, the offspring of labradors and standard poodles were genetically a 50:50 mix of the parent breeds. But while there was high genetic diversity among Australian labradoodles, the team say a very different picture emerged.

“The thing that we didn’t expect to such a degree was that the Australian labradoodle retains a huge amount of poodle genome and doesn’t retain a lot of the Labrador retriever genome,” said Ostrander.

Uhm, it depends on how you do it. I dont see anything wrong with new breeds as long as no one is getting hurt? Dogs would have done that anyway with or without us.

Yeah. 

Breeding is wrong when you create breeds like pugs, bulldogs or shih tzus who can barely breathe

In my opinion breed is wrong and inhuman in any case.

of course dogs would have the economic nerve to breed just to profit on their pups.

I'm always going to rescue dogs from now on if I choose to get one. But I've had Labradoodles and they are amazing dogs. They are great for people who have allergies because their fur doesn't shed and they have the happy, bouncy temperament of a Labrador. 

I find it weird that they say they are more poodle because with the two dogs I had, one was as crazy as it's poodle dad and the other was more Labrador. But I find that no 2 Labradoodles are the same. They all have unique personalities and are very interesting dogs.

The problem is that these dogs are often times inbred. People want to keep dogs pure race so they only let them mate with dogs of the same breed, which are usually related between themselves. There are also extreme cases when dogs are bred for looking cute and this predisposes them to all sorts of diseases and this is really not ok.

For this reason, stray dog are healthier because they have a much bigger genetic pool & the chances for them to be inbred are very low. I always advise people to adopt stray dogs instead of buying.

My guess is that my dog is a Karelian bear dog x Border Collie x Labrador x Schipperke mix.

sounds beautiful

My dog is like collie size and color, lab face, newfie fur

but now after seeing the Karelian bear dog, the pattern is pretty similar

I can attest to this. I have an Australian Labradoodle and she's nothing like a labradore, but so much like a poodle. My mum said she had a poodle when she was a kid and our dog is just like her. We have a miniature Australian labradoodle and she actually has different breeds in her lineage, but she is mostly like a poodle and sometimes like a terrier. She's also extremely clever and energetic - she's so clever that she impresses us everyday

This isnt a case of nature though, this is years of breeding and abuse.
