Actually Ted Cruz is beloved among the evangelist part of the voters. Trump is clearly going after this electorate with this move and it may be a clever political move 2 months before the election, even if this choice makes many of us roll our eyes one more time. Oh I know where his appeal lies, it's just very narrow. Truth be told, idk how clever it is since they were already going to vote for him. It's classic Trump just trying to fire up the *very* narrow and most rabid supporters of his who do not hold enough weight on their own to win him the presidency. He won 2016 due to a mix of these folks as well as conservatives, women haters, and folks sitting out because they thought hillary was a surefire win. He has none of those factors going into this election. I'm not saying it'll be a cakewalk, but this move isn't what I'd call particularly intelligent or well-strategized.
