The Weeknd did not win VOTY by votes

the VMAs, TCAs, etc are all "rigged" to a large extent, many of the award shows (the Grammys too but to a much lesser extent) are all curated by producers for ratings and who will put on the best show and stuff. I don't really hold much meaning to these awards for this reason. The Grammys do have most of their credibility though

He does, but these types of awards are more for the hardcore fans. No casual listener of Abel is gonna vote everyday.

Except The Weeknd does have a large fanbase, he’s not just a GP artist. I say this as someone who frequents the subreddit dedicated to his music. I’m actually surprised he didn’t win more.

And to the OP, I find it kind of disrespectful to say a black artist was given an award only to pander to the BLM movement instead of recognizing he deserved it. And sadly this is something stans will be saying anytime their fave loses to a person of color.

I agree with the BLM movement comment.

I'm probably just ignorant to it, but I always thought that while The Weeknd didn't have a huge hardcore fanbase, he had a large casual listener fanbase. Maybe it's because they're not as vocal as monsters or any other pop girl fanbase, but I've personally never seen someone who stans The Weeknd, for example, as much as they do Gaga or Beyonce or Katy, etc. I'm not denying The Weeknd's appeal, but I just never thought he had a big hardcore fanbase.

That’s completely inaccurate. He has a huge fan base w a large Twitter presence who are obsessed with his discography and constantly buy and flaunt his merch. He’s been around for a LONG time now, so you have older fans from his early work and newer post-Starboy.

He’s arguably Drake/Kanye status of notoriety.

I think it’s mostly because of his demographic. I don’t want to generalize but Gaga or Beyonce or Ariana’s fanbases are largely composed of gay men, who in turn make up a large portion of stan Twitter. And we know how gay fans are :huntyga:

The Weeknd’s fanbase is mostly straights, and straight fans I find they tend to be less loud and messy as opposed to gay fans of pop girlies. Then again, his fanbase is also composed largely of young people so I can see them voting for him. But also, there’s still a possibility he was given the award to spread them out, since he did perform and was one of the most popular guests.

Maybe it is  I'm not doubting it  I'm just saying that I was unaware of just how big he is.

Well, VOTY wasn't the only category influenced by the BLM movement, there's no way H.E.R. defeated both Taylor and Demi on Video for Good.

They also gave Maluma an award for his performance, same with CNCO.

Tbh yall, I think this mindset is toxic lets stop making this narrative that the BLM movement is the reason why these talented artist got their wins. Its becoming an easy excuse for people and I just do not agree with it. I think its ignorant.

How are people still annoyed? :awkney: Gaga took home FIVE awards, one of which was Song Of The Year & Blinding Lights (the monster hit of this year) was nominated in the same category :awkney: if it was rigged, it was rigged for Gaga :ohwell:

Not saying it's rigged, Gaga deserved everything she got, but y'all need a reality check sometimes. :laughga:

I'm sure they have manipulated many awards so a white person would win over a POC over the history so.....

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

His album was a big deal when it came out and so was his videos, bigger than Gaga's in marketing now. I even watched it to see what the big deal was. The Weeknd is a major player. Get over it.  He is legit and worth the fuss, just like Gaga was when she first started.

The future's uncertain and the end is always near.

I agree, the combination of GaGa and Ari fans or even the BYS fans must have beaten him?!

If they gave him the award just because he performed why didn’t they just give him one of the less important ones.

In award shows, online "voting" is just a factor used to drive engagement and are only used as suggestions to pick the winner. The decision makers who actually choose the winners are the producers who will choose who they want to/think will push ratings.
