ARTPOP really IS the album of the millennium... surprised?

In stan culture it really is THAT B. It's kind of in a weird halfway point, it didn't do bad enough to be a Glitter or Bionic, but didn't do well enough to be called impactful in the way Gaga's earlier works were. I think it's hard to define in that sense. Honestly the album is still one of the best pop albums of 2013 and deserved better, but considering the album track, single choices and promotional strategy I can understand the underperformance. The concept and sound felt about 6 months too late, and the latter half of 2013 was too crowded with female powerhouses for Gaga to stand out. ARTPOP with a more EDM sound and a trimmed down tracklist released Q1 2013 would've probably done much better than the one we got.

It was a commercial misstep, sure.. largely due to her management & the timing of the releases. It was entertaining as anything though.. Gaga wasn’t playing during that era. She was committed to bringing it to life & loved the art/music.. its a true shame the era was derailed by the business side of things.

the only place where ARTPOP is discussed is this forum and some other fan forums where it's being made fun of.

It isn't the album of anything, let alone the album of the millenium.

It's not important by any standard, other than being the only major flop of Gaga's career. Fans need to get over it and move on, instead of blaming the whole world for it.

What?

Girl, visit any forum where pop culture is a topic and ARTPOP gets mentioned every week.

Go on YouTube and there are new think pieces about the album every month.

People can’t talk about Gaga for too long without mentioning ARTPOP eventually.

It’s true that the GP doesn’t care about it, but in spaces dedicated to pop music and pop culture it’s probably THE album that lives rent free in everyone’s heads.

You can’t possibly talk about pop music in the 2010’s without inevitably having to mention it.

That’s how important ARTPOP is to understand Gaga’s career and the downfall of pop artists in the mainstream.

Trying to deny how relevant of a topic it still is to pop fans everywhere because it annoys you is something else.

The Fame, The Fame Monster and Born This Way are more talked about than ARTPOP but it's ok, it's a fun album.

completely agree. most of my friends are early 20s straight guys, they are NOT gaga fans by any means. I talked to them about recently about gaga for the first time ever cuz they gave Chromatica a shot (prime example of Gaga permeating the culture in a way she hasn't in a while post-ASIB) and they were not fans.

GUESS WHICH ALBUM THEY *DID* LIKE?

ARTPOP.

i was legit shocked they'd even heard of it, but they were like "ARTPOP was way better" "That album when we were in high school was sick" "This is really basic, how'd she go from Aura to this?"

(plz excuse their Chromatica shade, but hey :trollga:)

I completely agree with OP thought, ARTPOP lives rent free in a ton of people's minds and its overall impact within the pop landscape isn't reflected in its numbers – similar, honestly, to something like Lorde's Melodrama – produced zero Top 10 singles, but is one of the best regarded albums of the decade. I'm not saying ARTPOP is anything close to Melodrama critically, but you can't reduce an album's impact to its chart placement or singles.

Whether you love it or hate it, can't deny the impact it's had. Its iconic purely based on how polarizing it is, but also because if you strip away the "Warholian" schtick, the actual music was the most daring mainstream pop music at the time. Certainly ahead of its time. If she had released this in 2020, I doubt it would've been received the way it was in 2013.

Absolutely. So many people I’ve introduced ARTPOP to in college absolutely adore songs like Venus, Sexxx Dreams and GUY.

ARTPOP will be remembered as long as Gaga will be remembered but it doesn’t really have any significance outside of stan culture. I think that if Chromatica and ARTPOP switched places they both probably would’ve done a lot better tbh. A lot of the production on ARTPOP is ahead of its time, but a lot of it is really outdated too. If she released it now with a slightly updated sound, it would’ve been her experimental PC era and the gays would’ve eaten it up, the small disco influences probably would’ve done well with a mainstream audience rn too.

Sorry but this is the truth. Chromatica is Gaga’s best album and one of the best albums this century though, joined by Confessions on a dancefloor and Future Nostalgia

Is incorrect

i wouldn’t say people speak good of the album on other platforms, there are only around 40 people in total that I’ve ever seen calling ARTPOP one of the best albums of all time:selena:

No. Born This Way & Chromatica hold those titles. ARTPOP is a skip.

You know, I myself can’t be in the mood to listen to ARTPOP, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. However this is not an “ARTPOP is the best album” type of reasoning, but more about its dented(?) impact in pop culture
