Honest opinion of Gaga's VMA performance

I disagree with vocals of 911, I think the clean distortion free vocals gave the song a whole new vibe, especially with the choreo added in

I think her performance was great.

I really liked the concept, with Gaga stuck in isolation under her couch blanket like so many of us, her Chromatica headgear beside her, watching TV but longing for normality which for her is performing.  In her dream reverie she does perform, reinforced with her brain piano that we are sharing her daydream, which ends with the reality of her still back under her couch blanket, TV on, but defiant that she is fed up but will return.

That’s what I think I saw, and to me it’s brilliant relatable art.

- 911 should be an interlude with very cool graphics on tour

- Stupid Love sound 100x better live

- Gaga is best on the piano (we been knew)

- The whole thing vocally was no where near Gaga’s best, but we do have to factor in choreography and that unnecessary mask.

- Gaga still slays 12 years into her career

911 sounds odd live but is still the freshest song on the album and should have been lead. Since there were no live performance anyway, it would have made a perfect lead.

I do think the famous transition could have been better. Instead of running like that, she should have done some fierce strutting

ehmmm... no :bear:

Maybe... but it still felt kind of dull to me, and it felt a bit off. Especially compared to the rest of the performance

everything else served and was easily her best performance since the BTW era

Could have easily found a way to incorporate the mics into the mask tbh.

I agree with you. It’s admirable that she sings live with such commitment but the sound would have benefited from more playback and voice effects. They’re hard to sing while dancing.

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

911 live vocals were kinda off note, like she couldn't catch a breath but thats mainly because she's also dancing, I'll give her that.

But other than that it was great

I love Stupid Love live!! I love the rock vibe to it, and I can't wait to see more performances of it, which surprised me because it hasn't been one of my favorites off the album :woot:

I feel like 911 is a difficult song to do live, and maybe they need to just work on it a little more to make it fit a live performance better. I did still love it tho, and I'm happy they did perform it anyway even if it wasn't absolutely perfect!

ROM was great, as I expected it to be!

Did anyone else notice that two different performances were edited together during 911? (and most likely the whole thing but you could see it during 911)

I didn't notice it on 911, but it was very obvious on Rain on Me, especially if you keep an eye on Ariana's mask which magically changes how it's tied halfway through :triggered:

She looked the best she has since the beginning of the ASIB era. Her makeup and hair were actually amazing and I was shocked at how gorgeous her looks were overall. The team really pulled it out! The performance though was far from her best for me. Definitely better than some but far from what she could have done. It looked unpolished and not up to the professional production quality of some of the others. It always seems to be the case with her though that when she blows it out of the water in one aspect another is always sub par. I don't get how her fashion and hair and makeup and even vocals can be flawless and then the production be so lackluster. I'm not even going to speak on the choreo because Richy Jackson has been the weakest link of the Haus for years. His contributions are worse than her hairline 90% of the time.

911 was really off and Alice would have made a much better opener. Also, 2009 and 2013 remain unbothered. I also don’t get what happened to the end of ROM. Her talking got them out of sync. Am I the only one that thinks ROM sounded sped up as well? I feel like the production could have been more polished and more digital. Dojo’s performance seemed a lot more chromatica level. Overall I thought it was a great performance though.

Green screens are so tired imo. Every artist has done it so much during Quarantine. What made Gaga's so unique is she went out of her way to have a complete live set built, each movement was rehearsed (getting out of the bed, coming down the pole, the walk up to the piano, etc) and it was perfectly built around a green screen for added effects.

I didn't like the 911 vocals at first but after rewatch I think that the best way to live it.

And when she use her headvoice in Rain on me, it's so good, I always thought she would use much playbacks vocal when she sung it but she really killed it.

I always love Stupid Love and it even sound much better live.

Her dancing was stunning as well, especially in the Rain on me performance.

I’m glad someone agrees. She went from very operatic falsetto to a Britney-esqe voice in the chorus, and it was jarring. But she looked great and sounded wonderful the rest!

Been a long time but I'm back in town, and this time I'm not leaving without you
