More iconic: Shallow vs My Heart Will Go On

It’s funny coz at the time everyone in my grade at school was cringing at MHWGO. Nobody wanted to admit they liked it. Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton was the bigger ballad in ‘98 in the sense that all the cool kids weren’t afraid to publicly listen to it, and it felt like it we chose to hear it instead of it being shoved down our throats.

So, I chose Shallow. I know it’s too soon, but it just feels more authentic than MHWGO. The fact that it’s a duet, and was the first big male-female duet since the damn 80s (since 1987’s I’ve Had The Time of My Life from the film Dirty Dancing) makes it really special. It truly caught the whole world off guard. Nobody expected Gaga to be such a good actress, nobody expected Bradley Cooper to be such a good singer, and everyone that DIDN’T pay attention to Joanne didn’t expect a song like that from Gaga. In fact, many couldn’t even believe that it was her singing.

In years to come Shallow will become a gold standard ballad for generations to come. Maybe even like The Eagle’s Hotel California. It’s got that same classic country rock feel. MHWGO is writtenvery predictably and sounds like it was made for a movie.
