Not to put her down or anything but after listening to her recent songs I really don't see how she's more of an artist now than before. Her music and visuals are still the same with no growth whatsoever. I think she knows Smile will flop hard so she's working the whole 'im a real artist now idc about the charts' angle. Still love her tho. I'm hoping for more instrospective songs when the album comes out.

I get the reasoning, I just think a lot of artists have too much pride to explicitly say "I know I'm not a hit-maker anymore, so I had to wise up and just focus on creating great art. How is Katy NOT honest?

Now that's direct and to the point. Talk to her when you've done that, honey. 

It's like when Gaga said, "I write for the music NOT THE CHARTS" back in 2013. Money not the bling. 

(Which is NOT necessarily a good thing. You could say, yes! it's all about the SONGWRITER! Or, you could argue, ARTPOP was a vanity project. Hubris.)

Either way, Gaga (and Katy) can afford to do that because they've had all the numbers (and all the money), honey.

Not to mention, it's their album, their career, their life.    

Katy DOES want the album to do well, by the way. She said so herself. 

Per Billboard, "(Katy) said she's prioritizing her entry into motherhood over the traditional album rollout process, which the average journalist wouldn't assume at this point considering she's done NEARLY 100 INTERVIEWS about Smile." 

She seems very happy which is the most important thing.
