The once hugely popular YouTube Channel of food magazine Bon Appétit is falling apart. (Former) food editor at large revealed that the unfair treatment of BIPOC employees at Condé Nast (Bon Appétit's parent company that also owns Vogue magazine & Pitchfork) has not been resolved. In an instagram update she announced that in solidarity to the her colleagues of color, she has decided to quit her job at the magazin.

The Bon Appétit YouTube channel has not uploaded any videos in months, because of all the video hosts striking in solidarity. Since the first scandal happened, in which employee Sohla El-Waylly revealed that she was not paid for any video appearance and took on several responsibilites without equal to pay to her white colleagues, four BIPOC editors have officially quit & left the company: Sohla herself, editors Priya Krishna & Rick Martinez and Test Kitchen manager Gabby Melian.

I love all of them so much! It was one my favorite channels, before Sohla spoke out i had no idea of what was going on behind the scenes. I hope maybe they can create a channel of their own?

Sorry if I’m sounding uneducated or something, but I legit thought this was about Katy Perry... :air:

OT : I hope these people will be able to get out of that mess quick (and maybe start their own channel?) :wtf:

We don’t really need to talk too much, show each other what we know 🦋

Wait, did they actually leave the company or just quit the part where tgey have to participate in videos? The way Carla stated it sounds like the latter...

Anyway, I was really hoping this would get resolved because I was a big fan of their channel but their treatment of bipoc is unacceptable so maybe it's for the best to call it quits.

Oh, no - this is really sad. I love her and Gabby, and pretty much everyone who has been featured in their videos. It's such a shame what has happened, even more so that they still have not come to a resolution.

There’s basically like 2 divisions from what I understand

the YouTube channel area and magazine area

many of the chefs do both so most have quit the channel area but still continue with the magazine area because it supposedly isn’t linked to conde Nast? Something like that anyway

Im so so disappointed, this was my favorite channel :fatcat: CNE really couldn’t reach into their deep pockets to fairly compensate POC employees, disgusting

BA as a publication vs. BA as a youtube channel are structured differently and are two different divisions under Conde nast. From what I understand, the pay disparities between white and POC employees were more prevalent with video appearances and the work being done in video. I think Conde Nast had less rigid guidelines/standards for paying employees for video appearances, which led to uneven contracts based on "view count" and the youtube algorithm. Everyone that left video still said they'd work with the print version because things are more equitable.

That terrible white-washed "How You Should Be Eating Pho" video years ago was a sign not to trust BA's videos.
