Photos and videos of someone dressed up as the controversial figure of Zwarte Piet (which translates as Black Pete) are now forbidden on social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, the company reported on Tuesday.

After a nine-month process, Facebook is adapting its policy on discriminatory stereotypes worldwide, American company executives explained during a press briefing on Tuesday. The alternative for Zwarte Piet, ‘Roetpiet’ (Soot Pete, whose face is only streaked with soot), without the blackface features, is still allowed.

 

 

The Netherlands and Belgium have a long-standing tradition of celebrating the Winter holiday story of Sinterklaas, who is said to visit children’s homes to bring presents and treats on the evening of 5 (the Netherlands) or 6 (Belgium) December.

As the story goes, Sinterklaas has a helper – Zwarte Piet. Adults and children dress up as him, donning blackface and black curly wigs, painting large red lips, and often large golden earrings. The figure has been at the centre of a lot of controversies, with even American reality star Kim Kardashian commenting on it last year.

“We looked at different perspectives and spoke to more than 60 organisations and experts from around the world, including human rights specialists and activists,” they said. Belgian or Dutch ones, however, were not among them, reports De Morgen.

Im not a shane supporter , iv never seen any of his vidoes in full but people arent saying that those things he did arent wrong because they happened in 2010 , people are saying that because it happened in 2010 and he claims to have changed and does not think that way anymore he should be given the benefit of the doubt because everybody makes mistakes and has done something that maybe completely umacceptable to a certain group of people  at the point in  time or another in their lifetime.

They are basically saying cancel culture is trash

I think this is justified since they are prevented from posting pictures online but not really stopping those people from doing it. 

In a sense, it is a way for those people to realize their culture is hurtful to others and might encourage them to not practice it. 

I hope some Belgian and Dutch monsters can speak on their POV on this.

It's literally the same debate, and it's appalling that blackface keeps coming back in waves of popularity (or in the festival's case, never leaves). Comparing its call-out in the 90's to Shane shows it wasn't acceptable ten years ago, yet people still think it's acceptable today. When two things of a shared theme are prevalent in the news and public consciousness at the same time, it's common to compare them in the same discussions

The situations are obviously comparable  but they are so unrelated.
