I hardly believe anyone in their early 20s now being so loud in this thread would survive freshly moving to NYC in the 80s with no smart phone, no internet and that little money, especially when you were a woman. Have you ever had dreams of making it big? Now imagine being in the 80s, growing up in the middle of nowhere. She literally is the reason why many of us know it is possible.

girl don't know how long you been here but at the beginning of her career Gaga wouldn't get tired of saying how she dropped NYU and lived in a cockroach infested apartment and how hard it was to earn money from gogo dancing when we all knew her parents were rich and she could easily call them back and ask for money, she didn't and that's it's what she's proud of so I don't know why Madonna can't be proud of her leaving everything to pursue her dream and obviously the $35 is metaforic

Also adding that Gaga’s dad helped pay for her apartment that she lived in *by herself* on Manhattan in the village. That’s expensive af lmao People love an American folktale but the reality is always a bit more complicated. The only one I can think of that actually comes to mind is Janelle Monáe since her parents and family had *nothing* resembling wealth or contacts, but they did encourage her a lot. Then she went to NY then Atlanta and did her thing.

 

however, look at the stark difference in star power. Gaga is gigantic whereas Janelle, who I would say is absolutely her equal with respect to talent, ability, and work ethic, has yet to have a #1, yet to receive a Grammy. Has not gotten an Emmy. Has *not* had these gigantic world tours. She’s thankfully getting her due now but even still, it’s not quite as big. That is the power of contacts and privilege. It’s perfectly fine to have privilege. You don’t control that, but being aware of it is important. Idk Madonna’s story, but I would reckon she had a place to go when she landed in NYC and didn’t just arrive homeless, ya know? That is itself a privilege of sorts. Again, does *not* mean she didn’t work hard whatsoever. I’d never dispute that, but it paints a more realistic, if less awe-inspiring narrative for how she got to where she is. Hell, she might not even be aware of privileges that came her way. That also doesn’t negate the struggles she had, which we know were many, but like I said, it puts them into perspective. It takes this dreamer’s story and makes it a tangible roadmap.

They meant impact wise, which Gaga really could only dream of achieving that kind of cultural impact.

Y'all can argue for the specifics but we can't deny the fact that her career as "Madonna" started from the time when it's HARDER  to get in touch with people because of lower technology at that time and yet she managed to slay.

She's correct, Gaga is one of these stars that didn't need a platform (Disney, Voice etc.) to become a star. That's why I have a lack of respect towards these stars that came from Disney or such, they feel manufactured and nothing original.
