Also, reading some of the comments here, what is it with this phrase, "It sounds dated?" I never really understood that.

Like, what is the time frame in which a song sounds "dated." Because if an artist today released a record with 80s influences, everyone would say, "Wow! That sounds so nostalgic! I love it!", but when Gaga takes influence from 90s house, it's "dated"? When does it stop being "nostalgic" and starts being "dated."

Yeah I don’t get it either. Also a song sounding like something from a previous decade doesn’t make it bad. I personally don’t enjoy a lot of the current trends in pop music, so if I hear a song with a sound from another year which is a sound I enjoy, then I don’t care if it’s “dated”, I still enjoy it. People need to stop throwing it around as a negative critique. Does TFM sound like a product of its time, yes. Is it automatically bad bc that kind of sound isn’t present in pop music anymore? Hell no. And you can say the same about many iconic albums from different decades which also sound like a product of their time.

I love Chromatica for what it is now, I think the 90’s house really suits Gaga’s style and it’s a pretty good album. However, I was expecting a darker sound, not as commercial as it was. 911 and Rain On Me are actually more around the type of music I was expecting. When I read that she was working with Boys Noize, Sophie and when I saw the album cover and the robot/apocalyptic Paper Magazine photoshoot, I thought this would be more like a Government Hooker / Heavy Metal Lover sound she’d go for. Kind of what I was expecting ARTPOP to sound like.

Same. Even the cover doesn't really match with the album, but its still a serve.

I still adore the album though and there are no skips.

I feel like if that rumored EP is true, then the songs will be more dark.

I wasn't really expecting a certain sound, not until free woman and Babylon leaked.

I'm glad she went for the final sound on the album though, I love the production, especially on ROM & replay:firega:

I don't think dated refers to a time or era. I think it's how the production can have a cheapness to it. I don't really know how to explain it. I think Eurovision and Ace of Base have very dated sounds for example. But the classic eighties sound has a quality to it that still sounds good to this day.

i was expecting something a little bit more experimental, I thought the 90's haus sound would be a little bit heavier. I'll never complain about new Gaga music tho:vegas:

I guess I don't really understand what that means either. I don't really understand how a production can be "cheap" sounding. I mean, just objectively speaking, we have the technology now to create far better, clearer, and more diverse sounds than music producers had in the 80s. If anything, the 80s, in comparison to the tech we have now, seem "cheap."

I think nostalgia plays a huge role in it. A lot of people grew up either listening to 80s records, or knowing about 80s records. There's an innate bias there. However, the more recent something is, the more we are to really criticize and judge it. It's sort of like people nowadays always complaining about up-and-coming artists. They didn't grow up listening to their music, they haven't built connections with those particular artists, so they don't really care. Maybe the same is with the 80s. I've always said this: just because something is older doesn't necessarily mean that it's better. It's just different.

The Eurovision and Ace of Base sound compared to 80s pop or rock isn't necessarily better or worse. It's just different.

Not entirely, when Stupid Love first came out I expected a whole album with more of an 80’s/modern pop sound, but that changed once an interview with a magazine said the whole album sounded 90’s house, and well ok, it’s not my favorite genre but I was fine with that :vegas:

Then when the album came out it was NOTHING like I expected, it was AMAZING! Free Woman sounded amazing, MUCH better than the demo is what I first thought, and still do, 911 was my most favorite song right off the bat from first listen, and Babylon took me a day to get into. Alice and Fun Tonight I think were the only songs that took a SUPER long time to grow on me, but they finally have, and now I love the whole album and I love 911, Stupid Love, Rain On Me, and Sour Candy as those are all probably my favorites :firega:

No.

Alice, ROM, FW, and 911 was more of what I was expecting for the whole album and NOT 3 min> tracks. Also didn't expect it to be so...basic. Really wanted BOYS NOIZE level of house and experimental.

I still love the album, but not innovative as Gaga has released before. And since she has been in the industry 10+ years and it's 2020, I was definitely expecting more and not as safe...

I expected house dance Gaga, it feels like Gaga is back to her roots and more modern/dance pop. Which I love. I just didn’t expect her to release rain on me and cease the album era completely.
