Ranking Chromatica Based On The Writing!

DC

Featured Posts

Hey everyone! I thought it would be fun if I made a ranking of Chromatica, BUT, with how the lyrics of the songs are written and some of the most interesting lyrics that make them in the place that they are, so let’s get to it!

Disclaimer, this is all just MY opinion! Feel free to give your own list and examples down below, I don’t think ANY of the Chromatica songs were written badly or not greatly, these are just where I would rank all of them in terms of lyrical quality :)

Here’s the full list ranking Incase you don’t want to scroll all the way down:

Spoiler

1. 911

2. Replay

3. 1000 Doves

4. Sine From Above

5. Fun Tonight

6. Rain On Me

7. Sour Candy

8. Enigma

9. Plastic Doll

10. Free Woman

11. Stupid Love

12. Alice

13. Babylon

1. 911

“This is biological stasis
My mood's shifting to manic places
Wish I laughed, and kept the good friendships
Watch life, here I go again

...

Keep my dolls inside diamond boxes
Save 'em 'til I know I'm gon' drop this
Front I've built around my oasis
Paradise is in my hands
Holdin' on so tight to this status
It's not real, but I'll try to grab it
Keep myself in beautiful places
Paradise is in my hands”

2. Replay

“Every single day, yeah I dig a grave
Then I sit inside it, wondering if I'll behave
It's a game I play, and I hate to say
You're the worst thing and the best thing that's happened to me

...

Psychologically, it's something that I can't explain
Scratch my nails into the dirt to pull me out of pain
Does it matter, does it matter? Damage is done
Does it matter, does it matter? You had the gun”

3. 1000 Doves

“I'd do anything for you to really see me
I am human and visibly bleeding
When your smile is shaking, I'll catch you as you fall

I cry more than I ever say
Each time your luck seems to save the day

...

I've been hurting, stuck inside a cage
So hot my heart's been in a rage
If you love me, then just set me free
And if you don't, then baby leave
Set me free”

4. Sine From Above

“Yeah, I looked
With my face up to the sky
But I saw nothing there
No, no, nothing there
Yeah, I stared
While my eyes filled up with tears
But there was nothing there
No, no, nothing

I heard one sine from above
I heard one sine from above
Then the signal split in two
The sound created stars like me and you
Before there was up, there was silence
I heard one sine
And it healed my heart, heard a sine

...

When I was young, I felt immortal
And not a day went by without a struggle
I lived my days just for the nights
I lost myself under the lights
When I was young, I felt immortal”

5. Fun Tonight

“Feeling something that I can't explain
Think it's a wound I still entertain
I'd do anything to numb the flame
I guess I'm just on fire these days
I can't see straight, I can't see me
There's too much hurt caught in between
Wish I could be what I know I am
This moment's hijacked my plans

I'm feeling the way that I'm feeling, I'm feeling with you
I stare at the girl in the mirror, she talks to me too

Yeah, I can see it in your face
You don't think I've pulled my weight
Maybe it's time for us to say goodbye 'cause
I'm feeling the way that I'm feeling, I'm feeling with you
I'm not having fun tonight

You love the paparazzi, love the fame
Even though you know it causes me pain
I feel like I'm in a prison hell
Stick my hands through the steels bars and yell

What happens now
I'm not okay
And if I scream, you walk away
When I'm sad, you just wanna play
I've had enough
Why do I stay?”

6. Rain On Me

“I didn't ask for a free ride
I only asked you to show me a real good time
I never asked for the rainfall
At least I showed up, you showed me nothing at all

It's coming down on me
Water like misery
It's coming down on me
I'm ready, rain on me

I'd rather be dry, but at least I'm alive
Rain on me, rain, rain
Rain on me, rain, rain
I'd rather be dry, but at least I'm alive
Rain on me, rain, rain
Rain on me

...

Living in a world where no one's innocent
Oh, but at least we try
Gotta live my truth, not keep it bottled in
So I don't lose my mind
Baby, yeah

I can feel it on my skin
It's coming down on me
Teardrops on my face
Water like misery
Let it wash away my sins
It's coming down on me
Let it wash away”

7. Sour Candy

“Ask me to be nice and then I'll do it extra mean
'Cause it don't really matter, yeah
We know we'll get the streams
Inside got a heart of gold
But no, don't tell the streets, nah nah
If you wanna fix me, then let's break up here and now
But if you wanna win me then let's make up, not fall down
So tell me that i'm special
When I walk in you say wow
Uh-huh, uh-huh (Oh)

I'm hard on the outside
But if you give me time
Then I could make time for your love
I'm hard on the outside
But if you see inside, inside, inside”

8. Enigma

“Open-minded, I'm so blinded
Mystery man, woman phantom
Violet light smears, the atmosphere
I'm so scared, but I'm standing here

...
We could be jokers, brought to the daylight
We could break all of our stigma
I-I'll be your enigma
...

Can't stop staring, I'm so naked
Wrapped in shadows, my heart races
Dragon's eyes watch, goddess breathing
Give me something to believe in”

9. Plastic Doll

“I've got blonde hair and cherry lips
I'm state of art, I'm microchipped
Am I your type?
...

'Cause I'll have spent too long
Dancing all alone
Dancing to the same song
I'm no toy for a real boy
(Oh-la-la, oh-la-la)
If you're a real boy

...
I'm bouncing off the walls
No-no-no, I'm not your plastic doll
...

Tell me, who dressed you?
Where'd you get that hat?
Why is she crying, what's the price tag?
Who's that girl, Malibu Gaga?
Looks so sad, what is this saga?
Oh”
10. Free Woman

“This is my dancefloor I fought for
Ain't hard, that's what I'm livin' for
So light up my body
And kiss me, too hardly
We own the downtown, hear our sound”

11. Stupid Love

“Now it's time to free me from the shame
I gotta find that peace
Is it too late or could this love protect me from the pain?
I would battle for you, even if I break in two”

12. Alice

“Sick and tired of waking up
Screaming at the top of my lungs
Think I might've just left myself behind
Maestro, play me your symphony
I will listen to anything
Take me on a trip, DJ, free my mind”

13. Babylon

“Bodies moving like a sculpture
On the top of Tower of Babel tonight
We are climbing up to heaven
Speak in languages in a BloodPop® moonlight“

I don’t think Babylon should be last, there’s some smart lyrical choices in it that you need to know the context of to really understand. Other than that I think the list is spot on.

Alice and Babylon to me are like at the same level, but now that you mention it maybe they should’ve been switched... oop :billie:

Chromatography

the one thing i don’t like about 911 is how she talks about “biological stasis” but immediately says she’s “shifting” the two ideas are just contradictory, idk. maybe you can delineate body/biology and emotions/mood to be distinct entities, but i’m not entirely convinced of that, so the line makes 0 sense to me

There’s one brain that has that stays, the biological stasis, but inside of it is what’s shifting, the mentality :vegas:

I see what you mean, but just thought it was supposed to be about the opposing forces of mania/depression and them being paralyzing, or rendering her "inactive"

Wet Fire

Will do the top 5:

1. Replay: the way it encompasses PTSD, rape, anxiety, relationship problems and literally every mental illness or inner monster one may have makes it one of the best written songs by her.

2. Sine from Above: What storytelling, what philosophy, what an epic approach - incorporating origin myths into personal realizations :tony:

3. 911: Duh.

4. Fun Tonight: My stomach aches reading the lyrics of this one. And "I can see it on your face, you don't think I've pulled my weight" - what a devastatingly beautiful line. :fatcat:

5. Babylon: How can the lyrics be so underrated? It's rich with puns and extremely clever with lots of allusions. It's Poker Face-level cunning songwriting :pole:

I get your point. However, as you said, I think the biological stasis is the base and the mood shifting is the superstructure. It's like a plant. The root is biological, the stem is the illness and the top which moves/shifts with the blow of the wind is the mood.
