Joanne - A Reconstructed Version

I agree in that they feel disjointed. I disagree in completely removing them.

I think I would have changed the arrangement of the songs themselves; hell, maybe even the tracklist? Give John Wayne and DIC an even heavier comedic-country edge with a harder sound, to bounce off DH and PI more easily. Maybe move Joanne away from the first half of the album. Add an additional track to craft flow from rock-edged (DH, PI) to more country-tinged high-energy (AYO, John Wayne, DIC), to soft-rock Americana (MR, SP, everything else).

It's a fantastic album with a great collection of songs, that can feel a little disjointed at times, because of its track placements. I think that's why it took me a bit of time to warm up to it. But when I did, it clicked.

It’s almost as if she was hesitant about embracing the country-pop sound and felt like she needed upbeat bops to please the fans. It creates an in cohesive sound, something she very clearly made note to avoid on Chromatica (her most cohesive album since TF).

Which is why I loved the ASIB soundtrack so much. A majority of its tracks (sans the "pop" ones, which I still love), feel like they're the natural successor to Joanne- in writing, in arrangement, and in performance.

My point us proven. Those songs are constructed as more pop-y fan favorites, whereas the other tracks aren’t. As a result, they weaken the quality of the album. And album that’s about serious family topics doesn’t need a “comedic break”. Chromatica goes all the way on mental health and doesn’t have a random Jewels and Drugs stuck in. Hence why it’s her highest rated album.

I don't think that's what they are saying anything about the quality of the songs....PI is one of my favorite songs from Joanne. It's that on Joanne PI, Dancin' in Circles, and John Wayne sound like they belong on one album while Sinner's Prayer, Diamond Heart, and Joanne sound like they belong on a different album.

Definitely.

As OP said, I think possibly including the bonus tracks within the main tracklist, and rearranging it a bit, would have created a more understandable sonic narrative. Like, having [Perfect Illusion - Diamond Heart - Sinner's Prayer] as a spectrum of the album's sound makes sense (to me, at least, haha), but it's not as balanced as I think it could have been in the final tracklist?

But Sour Candy does fit in with the sound of the album. It’s not about quality and whether you like it or not, but about cohesion.

I still want Gaga's sparse soul searching guitar and piano pop album. Taylor's folklore reminded me how much I want this from Gaga. I agree Joanne had some songs of that type, like the title track. I want a whole album like that.

Am I the only one who thinks Joanne is cohesive? While a few songs are a bit different to others, there's nothing that doesn't fit in for me :laughga:

The problem with Joanne isn’t just a few songs that don’t fit the album. Even with songs like A-Yo and Sinner’s Prayer, it sounds like a pop star trying to do country. I’m not going to say I hate that, but it’s just... she can do better than that (ASIB Soundtrack). If she actually collaborated with artists who are mastered in the genre she could create such amazing music. Even if it’s just one on one stuff. But with Joanne I have no idea what she thought she was doing by mixing people like Ronson, Tucker, and Lindsey. It’s like she wasn’t even aiming for sincerity sonically, just trying to get a record out.

Joanne should have been more like Diamond Heart and Find Yourself and less like John Wayne, DIC and Come to Mama :bear:

Neither are Stupid Love, Enigma, Babylon, or Free Woman.

*I know people have discussed the cohesiveness of Born this Way, but I actually think it managed to mesh several different genres is a fairly cohesive way...partially due to the order of the album so it seems kind of natural when it shifts from one sound to the next.

ooooo i absolutely agree with this. Born This Way is easily her most cohesive album next to Chromatica. Sonically, BTW ties together extremely well, even while juggling soooooo many different styles like we range from heavy metal, disco, rock, industrial, opera, mariachi, and synth-pop, it's so impressive how naturally it mixes these genres together to create one unified pop album. it still blows me away.

I really wish Gaga would collab with Fernando Garibay again omfg

I agree, while I love Joanne it’s also oddly put together and there are songs I always skip. I think Gaga would have loved to do a project like Folklore but she is pressured to please her fans and label
