Christopher Columbus Statues Removed

I think this is confusing. People don't have historical counciousness. They think that by trying to write history they can change how things work.

I understand that authorities are removing this for caution.

But there are a lot o people who would want to do this permanently, for those people I would ask, would you go back to Europe? or Africa? or Asia? Cause if Columbus is part of a present time problem, you are too!

Columbus isn't just the reason of a horrendous story of colonization, hes the reason of you too, fellow american!

Would you give up on California for Mexico? Or Texas? Or restablish Hawaii Kingdom? What about all the land "you" stole from native people? It was you? The statue is so responsible for this as you, so beware.

You can't apply justice to history retroactively without losing yourself in the process.

Justice is now, and for the future. don't be hypocritical

because he's a figure of oppression

He was not a opressor...so. Why making everything that complicated ? When we follow that path, in the end we all should not exist and talk here at all.

This isn't about rewriting history.

This is about stopping the glorification of people that do not deserve to be glorified.

I am mestizo Mexican. Yes I only exist because of Colombus discovery of America and the genocide of Mexican people by the spanish

But I bear no responsability for said genocide. I am the result of it.

"the statue is so responsible for this as you" Yeah, a statue individually bears as much responsability as anyone. But the person the statue represents bears responsability of genocide, atrocities and murder, unlike me, a result of said genocide and murder.

The statue removal movement isn't about censuring history. No one is asking for these people to be removed from museums, history books etc. The statue removal movement is about ending the GLORIFICATION of people that do not deserve to be glorified.

Colombus caused the genocide of upto 2 million people. If you want to learn more about his atrocities click here.  https://www.vox.com/2014/10/13/6957875/christopher-columbus-murderer-tyrant-scoundrel

Also the excuse of "it was a different time" isn't valid. Even during his time many people were horrified by what he was doing leading to him being jailed.

Honest question: do you think statues of hitler should be erected across europe because of his historical impact?

Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.

I think the point is that while historical figures, shitty or not, are a part of our history, that doesn't mean we should glorify them.

It sets the wrong example.

He was not a opressor, thats what i said. You not really compare a man who was brave and sailed on sea through the world with a man who commanded to kill people for racist reasons? You have to look at it all in a disentangled way. Hope you are not serious with the comparison.

So just stop being hypocrital and say "We are doing this just because we want to do this", cause if it was really to, as you say "end the GLORIFICATION of people that do not deserve to be glorified"  no stone would be left unturned in America.

If you start dealing with history this way all american civilization would perish, but you don't want aallll of it to perish right? Just a part of it, cause it's cool, it's trendy, it's twitter friendly...

But you are right, you're so right that hurts. Put down those statues, babe, all of them. Make justice, just as we humans do... Bye

That's a lot of emotions for someone who can't understand that seeing violent and murderous conquerors sitting in state in the heart of our cities could be somewhat uncomfortable and be seen as a form of oppression. And it's not just an US issue, the most bloody warriors of every country's history have replicas in so many of our streets. Why not celebrate people who fought for humans rights instead of war figures? Or why not stop this cult-like tradition and replace by art-pieces or else? History will always exists via historian's work and education (which also need an update btw). It's not necessary to have reminders from our barbaric past in public spaces. I sure did not learn history from statues, fortunately.

Lol at anyone who thinks this is change... Meanwhile Mayor Lori is okay with federal agents coming into Chicago, reversing course, refuses to defund the CPD or end qualified immunity. Hundreds of protestors in Chicago still getting beat up and not receiving justice from what happened over the past month.

This is called performative activism. And it’s a ****ing joke.

That being said im not complaining that this POS is no longer being venerated. He represents the worst of colonialism and Native American genocide. He should be replaced with a statue representing a leader from the now basically eradicated Illinois tribe

Can i ask you why?

Because as a Native American he’s responsible for killing so many of my people. He should not be glorified.
