Wet Fire 7,448
Hi Are you the one who finds the buildup in the first chorus of Fun Tonight "frustrating"? I mean, with the drop, no instrumental kicks in to make you move your body. (Sorry if this interpretation is AP by another member) I would like to interpret it as a creative choice. When she says "I'm not having fun tonight", I feel like the absence of an instrumental segment after the chorus hints at the mood of the song. Like, no dance release is coming after the buildup because she cannot make herself have fun even after trying. The production reinforces the lyrics. But the AAaaaAAAaaa after the second chorus with the slightly dancy production may counter my interpretation. But if we consider Gaga saying that each time after Bloodpop takes her to write music, she is at first crying and being reluctant, but ends up dancing through her pain. I guess, the instrumental that kicks in after the second chorus symbolizes this. Anyway, stream Chromatica, stay positive.
monstertoronto 10,116
I kind of agree with this. I initially didn’t like this song because the build up was so amazing and then there was no euphoric chorus payoff. But then I thought it was the point of the song. I love the song now, but I still wish someone would do a slight remix that keeps most of the song exactly as it is but then gives the chorus a euphoric release
River 116,467
The oh oh oh oh part is the "dance your pain away" idea of Chromatica, same thing with Replay and 911, with this part in Fun Tonight, it's her breaking point and she's releasing the pain through the dancing, it's like you can feel her crying and in pain. It's sad that the fans don't like the song tbh So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy
looking4wonderland 65
I never heard it as a “dance” song. It’s the mid-tempo song of the album for me.
Prostitute Barbie 4,077
I never thought of it this way but it makes perfect sense like if you go out when you're feeling awful about a breakup or whatever and at first you just can't make yourself dance because you're so broken inside but before the night is over you feel like you HAVE to do it or it was all a waste of time so you dance through your sadness. That's exactly what that final drop sounds like on Fun Tonight
hELXIG 42,966
No because I'm not addicted to beat drops like everyone else seems to be and I don't understand that? I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
Ivy 12,516
I had the same interpretation, I think it's an artistic choice rather than a flaw. I love this song it speaks to me the meow in zombieboy

Yeah, it doesn't become dancy even towards the end. A midtempo instrumental release at best.
HugoJG 1,108
I always felt an emptiness after the first chorus, like something was missing, but the way you explained it makes perfect sense now

I'm not addicted to such drops either. Even during my first listenings, I didn't really feel any absence of beat drops which might leave me wanting more. I'm really fine with the way the song is. Neither am I. And Chromatica has way too many of them. Literally almost every song. I thought that died in like 2015?

Yet I still see people left right and centre criticising Chromatica for not having enough beat drops or 'teasing them' and leaving them unsatisfied with 'bad drops' music comes in all different forms and different structures. Idk why people can't just enjoy the ride I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
alsemanche 93,750
I always thought of it that way and that's why I never understood the hate it gets. Not every song has to be a dancy song with a beat drop and crazy music. I think the production and the "frustration" it creates is essential to it. Soft, soothing, and succulent

Idk why people can't just enjoy the ride Who knows. I’m the opposite. I wish more songs were like Alice and 911. Just straight forward pop songs with full-force choruses. Beat drops are a waste of time outside of club environments. When I’m listening to the album on the couch with headphones on, a beat drop is tedious to get through. 2School4Cool 6,434
I never thought about that, but I love this theory. I never felt the need for a drop to begin with, but that’s just me personally. My first time listening I wasn’t focused on the production at all, to be honest, I was just focused on the melody and lyrics. The simplicity of stripping the music back and just saying “I’m not having fun tonight” was impactful enough for me that it left me in awe from the first listen.
