I don't remember Gaga ever having massive universal appeal. She's ALWAYS been controversial. Taylor has never been accused of worshipping the devil or having a penis (the transphobia during that time..whew chile). Being too "weird" and focusing on the gay community also hurt her A LOT.

She was shadow banned and there were multiple articles reporting that she was banned. The truth is much of Asia is conservative like Indonesia and nobody would dare to support her openly in those places.

TF Gaga had universal appeal, her weirdness was seen as interesting at that time + she made her best commercial pop music during that period because her record label controlled her a lot more. If Gaga makes a bad song or stylistic choice in her music now people around her are more scared to tell her the truth. I personally don’t like how she sings as if she’s gurgling water in the chorus of Sour Candy which ruins otherwise a great song. 

Taylor Swift has never taken a huge risk. She plays it safe, making good pop music with certified hit producers like Jack Antonoff and Max Martin (while Gaga chooses to work with unproven producers like Bloodpop and DJWS) and Taylor benefits from being a beautiful blue eyes white blond girl (fitting into the Post-Instagram world hence why conventionally pretty girls like her and Selena have such huge followings on there compared to Gaga) while Gaga’s looks are unconventional.

Taylor is basically the epitome of a privileged white girl who benefits from her looks and nepotism (her dad got her a recording contract at a young age and she met celebs like Britney Spears). She’s 30 now so radio and public have been slowly moving on from her but she still has a core fanbase. If this album is in the folk genre then it won’t do as well but the first few weeks sales will be huge. She’s a smart and business savvy woman as well so she knows how to play the game and shift her narrative.
