FfFfFfFF 56,105
Billboard has just announced that Rosalía will take part in "Latin Music Week". The digital event celebrating Latin music & culture will take place in October (October 20-23, 2020). For anybody unfamiliar with her name, she rose to prominence in 2018/2019 with her highly acclaimed experimental flamenco album El Mal Querer and successful collabs and standalone singles like Con Latura, Autu Cuture, Yo x Ti, Tu x Mi or TKN, mostly in Spain, Latin America and parts of Europe. Other singers that will perform at the event are: J Balvin, Maluma, Ozuna and Black Eyed Peas..
Sneaky Oliver 22,221
I know Latin doesn’t refer to Latin America only but i think they’re basically celebrating Latin America music and she’s European, right?! I wish they could do a whole Latin America lineup. European artists are way more “privileged” (for the lack of a better word)
Franz Ferdinand 2,359
Yeah, as a Latinx person, this feels very uncomfortable to me. She's not Latina and her music is very clearly (to me at least) not Latin. Flamenco was developed through cultural exchange between Romani, Spanish, and Muslim folk in southern Spain, it's not in any way Latin American (and it doesn't sound similar at all, it's just in Spanish). xcx 1,214
I love her, but she’s not latin. She shouldn’t be doing this.

Latin music includes the music of Iberian Peninsula and Latin America.

Flamenco is Latin music. It is essential to Iberian Peninsula and her songs are entirely written and sung in Spanish (the criteria for Billboard's Latin charts). There are many influences in flamenco for sure, but modern-day Latin music is very influenced by different genres such as Caribbean music, reggae, reggaeton, pop, electronic and hip hop as well. While Latin America is a big part of the Latin world, there is Latin music and culture outside of it.
Babel 41,495
It’s weird because no one refers to spanish people as “latin” (even though they technically are latin too).

I agree. As an European I find it more weird that Americans are restrictive of what counts as Latin.

It's even weirder when you consider that one of the big influences in what is considered Latin music in the Americas is of African origin (which is not technically "Latin"). But hey, it has to fit the narrative. somehow. "Fame Is A Boomerang" - Maria Callas

I mean, yes they do. Not in America tho, but here Latin means countries which language derived from Latin. So, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French... Killa 17,491
Ah.. This is really not that much of a controversial topic. Spanish music is classified as latin music. Its the only way spanish and even more, portuguese music can expand internationally besides theyre borders. Apart from some hit here and there. Yeah its a strategic stretch. Italian and french music isnt included cause the ties with america just isnt strong. For obvious reasons. But technically its not news and like... No outrage is needed. Killa 17,491
E V Not trying to digress too much. This mostly a benefitial thing for both ends. Where can rosalia go to expand if she isnt associated with latin music. Maximum, she can dive into italian or french market. Which wont help much.. But this way she is instantly international act. And can promote in even usa, which makes visible in other parts of europe as well. On other hand take anitta. Brasilian music still has not much reach besides some massive hits from time to time besides theyre own work being acknowledged internationally, as part of the culture. Cause latin america speaks mostly spanish. Its a big country but she needs to record in spanish or english to cross over. Since portugal has no market, at most can bridge to african luso cointries. But she was already present in these markets. Which eventually helps inti becoming international.
