Missouri governor: "kids will get over it" (Covid-19)

“These kids have got to get back to school,” Gov. Parson, a Republican, said in an interview on Friday with talk-radio host Marc Cox. “They’re at the lowest risk possible.”

Parson continued: “And if they do get Covid-19, which they will—and they will when they go to school—they’re not going to the hospitals. They’re not going to have to sit in doctor’s offices. They’re going to go home, and they’re going to get over it.”

St. Louis-area schools, and other districts in Missouri, are expected to release their reopening plans on Monday.

Missouri has seen a significant spike in coronavirus infections this month, averaging 854 new confirmed cases per day last week (the state has a total of 35,154 cases and 1,158 deaths).

I hope that this crisis will shed light to more and more people that politicians, both republican and democrat, don't give a **** about you. The only way to bring about real change is to push aggressively against our political leaders and force that will of the working class onto the government. That is the only way our government will even slightly tend to the needs of working people over the billionaire class. 

 

We have many social problems in our country but the most important fight is CLASS. When we address class proxy war going on in our country we can move forward with social justice (and I would argue the two are interrelated so when you are addressing one, you are tangentially addressing the other).

Kids are disposable objects in the eyes of Republicans. They have to get over a disease that is still not fully well-known (and is the most present in that country), they have to get over the fact that they can catch/spread it to their family and teachers. All that, just like they have to get over the fact that there are more active-shooter drills than fire drills in schools, because there's "nothing else we can do about it :/ "

This article is literally the equivalent of, "Most people don't die of COVID-19, so I won't wear a mask in public because it's all just media hearsay." The only part of this article that I can understand is the cost of online schooling. I do think that tuition should be lowered, but that's a different discussion entirely. 

With someone with the name, "President Biden," I'd expect something different from you

Literally NOBODY of any power is saying to not wear a mask. Trump encouraged people to wear one. Same with Pence, **** Cheney, etc. So that’s just a bad argument because literally no one of any political office is anti-mask. Sure are some people skeptical of the tyranny of government mandating masks? Yes. Are some people skeptical about the science behind masks, as they don’t prevent all transmission? Also yes. And that’s fair, understandable and okay. We should always question things.

 

But what the article does point out is:

 

1.  Case and point, children don’t contract nor die of this disease. Claim apl the theory you want, but the #s show that the amount of cases in ages 8-18 are statistically null.
 

2. School is not “guaranteed safety” from all risk. Students get killed in sports injuries at school. High schoolers die in car accidents. Etc etc etc. So to just cancel all school because of a limited risk, would be to cancel it indefinitely. 

 

3. Online school, like you said, is not affordable. But not just on college tuition, but in all K-12 schools. Lower income area schools, where students frequently lack internet access and safety at home, are not just unable to do school because the government hasn’t bought them a new Chromebook. That’s an easy band-aid of a fix. These kids love in unsafe environments. The amount of abuse has risen due to lockdown, as people are forced to stay at home with abusive individuals. Students are less likely to seek shelter in teachers about issues like LGBT discrimination if they are stuck in an unwelcoming home. Working parents cannot handle doubling down as a homeschool teacher in an already crumbling economy.

 

You do get how economics work, right? We can’t just print more money and expect problems to disappear. Schools (in person) HAVE to reopen. For children’s sake. For working parent’s sake. For the future of American.

But kids are catching it, some of whom are experiencing devastating symptoms. Moreover, we still don't know about the long-term effects the disease has on the body, even in mild cases. 

Moreover, you need someone to teach these kids, you need custodians, you need people working the lunchrooms, etc. These are adults, many of whom will fall into the high-risk category. What happens when these people get the virus and are out for weeks? Who is going to take over their jobs, and will the class/school need to be shut down for two weeks to have everyone who's come into contact with the affected people quarantine? Also, let's face it: a lot of these schools have terrible ventilation systems and are not so great at keeping things clean to begin with.

Add onto that: if schools do reopen, do not expect students to have the same in-person experience as they did in the past. In-person learning will by necessity be an empty shell of an experience. It will also be traumatic. I'm still traumatized from watching ET as a kid and seeing all those scientists in biohazard suits – imagine seeing your teachers dressed like that in person, because some of them will be!

Teachers are being told to write their goddamn wills in order to go back to work. I care about teachers like @SamanthaC and would like to keep them alive and healthy. I also acknowledge that yes, there are tons of reasons why students need to attend in-person school. This is a crappy situation no matter what. I won't judge parents who choose to send their kids to school if their schools reopen, just as I won't judge parents who choose to keep them home. Similarly, I won't judge teachers who choose to retire early or find a different job so that they don't have to risk their lives for crappy pay. Every teacher who teaches in person during the pandemic deserves hazard pay.

This virus is a new mutation, so you cant say yet that children are not vulnerable to it or not spreading it. In europe at some point there was a discussion about this in the media. There are many more factors to consider (like obesity- and thats something that definitly exists in the US) and putting the children at risk now is just whack. Also, what happens when they are sick at home? In the best case the parents, who might spread it further and miss at their work, in the worst case the grand parents.

Meanwhile Tennessee is pushing back opening by a week and is allowing remote learning. 

But like seriously, it feels like the American political system has gone off the deep end because it just can.
