Nasa has released a mesmerising timelapse video of the sun that condenses an entire solar cycle into an hour of footage, using images of the star taken every hour continuously over a decade.

Nasa’s Solar Dynamics Observatory has gathered 425 million high-resolution images of the sun, from its launch in February 2010 until June this year, which have now been stitched together to form the video.

While the 20 million gigabytes of picture data captured over the decade have contributed to “countless new discoveries about the workings” of the sun, according to Nasa, the images have now been arranged into a 61-minute video showing events including transiting planets and eruptions.

The sun is so amazing. All those solar flares (I think that’s what they’re called) are so interesting to me

Amazing footage, for people studying this phenomenon this must have so much information!

It amazes me that this giant ball, looking almost perfect to us, is not even solid. That's all gas (edit: well actually plasma, but the only difference is it interacts with electromagnetic fields)

Anybody else clock that it’s burning out toward the end of the video?

The sun seems very cocky if you ask me. Like he thinks he is special or something

And the sun is about 4.6 billion years old, so this is like 0.000002% of its life

Do you feel him sir?

When you think about it, a star like our sun is actually very cool and also pretty special, It's a very chill star which is not really that common, there are tons of stars out there who are aggressive (it has a lot of solar flares and a lot bigger)
