Land productivity/fertility might be a factor too..  According to this map, the ''cold'' countries have greater agricultural resources that might've given them a head start back when agricultural output made up most of the country's wealth.

The question itself shows lack of understanding: over the last 5,000 years since civilisation began, cold countries only became rich in the last 500 years. That is, cold countries have only been rich for 10% of recorded history. To answer the question of WHY the situation reversed, one word is sufficient: slavery.

The environmental conditions are the biggest factor. Hot countries 24/7 make it too hard for productivity to take place where as cold countries that experience seasons or moderate heat are suitable for productivity. Of course colonialism plays a role too but I wouldn’t say it’s the biggest factor.
