She risked her career at a time it wasn't cool to be supporting the gay community. No funding for AIDS was released from the US government until well into the 90s, and Madonna organised countless events, dancethons, gave money from her shows to AIDS research. She advocated for gay adoption all the way back in the 1990s. Her image, power and influence has always been there to support the gay community and she was integral and ahead of the zeitgeist that came in the following decades. Activism was and still remains an essential part of her artistry, and to deny that is just historical revisionism. Gaga definitely is an important activist, and like you, I would have no problem to have either of them winning this Billboard poll, but no need to discredit one to prop up the other.
