2k-year-old Scythian woman’s boot found frozen in Altai Mountains

In Siberia’s Altai Mountains, the above boot was discovered along with a number of nomadic afterlife essentials—jewelry, food, weapons, and clothing.

These artifacts (and their mummified owners) were well preserved thanks to permafrost and the painstaking attention the Scythians paid to their dead.

As curators at the British Museum wrote in advance of the 2017 exhibition Scythians: Warriors of Ancient Siberia: 'Nomads do not leave many traces, but when the Scythians buried their dead they took care to equip the corpse with the essentials they thought they needed for the perpetual rides of the afterlife. They usually dug a deep hole and built a wooden structure at the bottom.'

The red cloth-wrapped leather bootie, now part of the State Hermitage Museum's collection, is a stunner, trimmed in tin, pyrite crystals, gold foil and glass beads secured with sinew. Fanciful shapes—ducklings, maybe?—decorate the seams.

I love the Scythians. Their culture is so enigmatic, mainly because of their nomadic lifestyle, but also because of their horseback culture, their distinctive artefacts have been found from Poland all the way to Mongolia!!! So while they didn’t have cities or temples (like Babylon ) they did have everything else, especially fancy carpets

They really lived in large territory. Fun fact: I live in a place that was once inhabited by them. I could even be related with the lady.

I'm sure in Russia there are much more undiscovered antiques. In steppes, mountains and the forest. That was in Siberia. But there are for sure also old cultural treasures to find in Povolzhye or in Ural. There are for sure much more secrets not only about Russia history but also about humanity in general.
