If Earth Song had made it onto Dangerous, the hoop on one of them that the animals are passing through to become skeletons on the other side would have been cool. Needs more rat looking things though
Werewoof 2,375
I’ve never heard this!!! Earth song as a lost love song originally? Or loss of innocence?
PartySick 144,959
Random short song study time Today's topic: Do You Know Where Your Children Are aka 12 O'Clock There's three versions of this song that I'm aware of. The remix on Xscape (which I take a hard pass on ) Spoiler The original demo, which I believe is around the Bad era Spoiler And my favorite - the demo that samples Naughty by Nature's O.P.P. (which samples ABC) I'm not sure if this is another situation like the Tricky Stewart remix of Slave to the Rhythm where the previously leaked version of a song is a remix mistaken for the original but...I still like this one best. I like to imagine Michael pulling another "I love that Rick Ross song ~growl~" and laying this song over this beat Spoiler Something interesting I've learned today is that the title of the song actually comes from an old PSA that made its way into news bumpers and even The Simpsons Spoiler It's also yet another song where Michael argues for child welfare in a few different ways. 1) I can't find the interview for it I believe it was in the outtakes of the Bashir documentary but Michael talked about kids growing up too fast with parents who refused to be parents. The "destruction of the family unit", or mothers who wouldn't hold their kids and fathers who wouldn't teach their kids, was something that greatly bothered him. I suspect this is because he experienced neglect as a kid. Katherine was a backseat parent to a father that was more of a manager than a dad to his kids. It's also worth noting he touched on this too when he was accepting the Grammy Legend Award in 1993 with his speech. I realize that many of our world’s problems today — from the inner city crime, to large scale wars and terrorism, and our overcrowded prisons — are a result of the fact that children have had their childhood stolen from them. The magic, the wonder, the mystery, and the innocence of a child’s heart, are the seeds of creativity that will heal the world. I really believe that. 2) Just like in Hollywood Tonight, Michael calls out powerful pedophiles in the industry. Now she's on the move, she's off to Hollywood She says she wanna be a star, she heard the money's good She gets off from the train station, the man is waiting there "I'll show you where the money is, girl just let down your hair" He's taking her on the streets, of Sunset Boulevard She's selling her body, hot girl that will take you far The police come 'round the corner, somebody there they told He's arresting this little girl, that's only twelve years old! And the lyric from Hollywood Tonight that "they", for some reason, removed before putting the track on Michael: West bound Greyhound To tinsel town Just to pursue her movie star dreams She’s giving hot tricks to men Just to get in When she was taught that that’s not clean Because she’s only fifteen Spoiler A bop And this is interesting too 'cause I've mused about Michael's sexuality for a loooong time. @Max the Lagomorph, you got me thinking about it again I believe him when he said he was straight but where his brothers were young womanizers, he was always more reserved. He even tried talking groupies out of meeting with his brothers but they rarely listened his relationships were always quiet and private aside from a few big names like Brooke Shields and Lisa Marie Presley...but I guess there is no keeping things quiet with them since they're both well known Anyway, I think he experienced a form of child sexual abuse tbh. Joe had him and his brothers performing in strip clubs as kids and had Michael going around, crawling under the tables and lifting ladies' skirts up which everyone thought was "just so cute and funny" but imagine how much that and any other weird crap Joe had him doing must have warped his sexual maturity later in life? Then, while on the road, his brothers would have sex with women not only in the same room, but sometimes in the same damn bed where Michael was expected to pretend to be asleep. Like...poor kid... It stands to reason he would grow up and have child welfare be something so close to his heart. He suffered immensely as a kid and wanted to do whatever he could to limit the suffering of others. That meant creating Neverland Ranch for families to come and let go for some time, where kids could just be kids. No worrying about economic hardships or medical issues. Just grab some candy, have a water balloon fight, go see the animals, hop on some rides, and enjoy yourself. That meant writing songs like The Lost Children, Hollywood Tonight, and Do You Know Where Your Children Are to beg people to be responsible and open their eyes to the abuse and neglect so many kids face. What we need to learn from children isn’t childish. Being with them connects us to the deeper wisdom of life which is ever-present, and only asks to be lived. They know the solutions that lie waiting to be recognized within our own hearts. Today, I would like to thank all the children of the world, including the sick and deprived…I am so sensitive to your pain. He was sensitive to their pain because he lived it and then he saw it in others. And he wanted to change it So anyway, that's why I've had that song on repeat for hours today

Werewoof 2,375
@PartySick that was beautifully written ❤️❤️❤️ A great analysis!!! I myself still respectfully ponder and wonder. However, I really didn’t consider the clubs and such… that’s a yikes for any kid for any sexuality honestly. I can’t even imagine. It probably did something to the older boys too, even if it manifested in different ways (Superfly sister??) I need to buy biographies of his to do some serious research. But I’m unsure of what’s a good source and what’s just MJ cash grab
