How do you personally define “pop music”?

Title. Do you take “pop” as in shorts for popular/trending music? electronic music? made for the gheys? Would you consider it a genre or a label?

"I heard if you record Gaga snoring and play it backward it sounds like an act. 2 unreleased."

A label. For example DUA is a multigenere diverse multitasking chanteuse but people reduce her to only being a "pop" artist. Not fair.

To me pop music = popular music.

A sound that is trendy, catchy, and fun. A sound that appeals to the masses and not a specific genre group. Pop is a hard genre for most artist, because you have to remain popular, current, and creative.

I define it by "not being something that isn't pop"  Yes it makes sense in my head haha
Like if I can't put it in an obvious category like rap, rock, metal, hip hop etc... then it's pop

:triggered: why does everyone think pop music is electronic or made for gays?

Pop music has no sexuality. It’s a genre meant to make all people bop no matter who you are. Also technically pop and EDM are separate genres tbh.

California Girls, Teenage Dream, Part Of Me, Roar. These songs are examples of what is pure pop, for me. That sound basically.
E.T. is also pop, but electronic dance pop, so it's not the same. I hope I'm making sense :laughga:

But I don't agree with the idea that whatever is popular is pop. Old Town Road for example was extremely popular, but I wouldn't call it a pop song

Popular music, music that everyone seems to listen to and is easy to listen to and radio friendly

Wow, that is a super unique and reflective question.

I would say anything "trending."

Anything that I know other people in my own circle are AWARE of even, which makes my branding of the term quite loose.

The majority of music I listen to no one I know has even heard of, including most of my country even. I strive to snoot around and find very unknown artists which is a taste I developed as a pretentious adolescent and have never really been able to change about myself. :duck:

aquiNo

I agree that pop music sometimes is popular music, but sometimes popular music can be another definited genre (for example "back to black" by Amy)

I don't understand it as a musical genre, can someone tell me if it exists as such?

For example, "someone like you" by Adele has Soul and Pop as a musical genre, what makes her pop musically?

Sorry for my ignorance, here to discuss :oprah:

100% agree. I’m straight and musically versatile but it’s statements like those that makes pop music unwelcoming to straight guys or other ethnicities.
