Covid-19 Increasing Female Inequality

During most recessions, ironically males are actually the ones that tend to experience job losses the most during recessions because male dominated industries like construction, trades, factory lines, resource extraction, machinery etc tend to be more volatile with economic swings... But males on the flip side also tend to benefit more from job gains and pay raises during good economic times

 

This time around tho due to the nature of Covid-19, female dominated service industries like retail, hospitality, restaurants, hair saloons etc which tend to be more stable with economic swings are getting hit much harder since they are being forcibly shut down

 

Worse these service segments of the economy deemed as the higher risk are slower to reopen and will also face more permanent job losses with more business bankruptcies

 

As a result while more males had their jobs closed for less time and more have a job to go back to, more women are being forced this stay home longer and more may loose their jobs permanently

 

Another factor, daycares and schools remaining closed has resulted in lower payed women (on average) choosing to stay home to take care of kids even if their jobs became available again

Quite interesting, and I can see that applying in other countries as well.

 

Also, I think, jobs that are more easily done remotely, and I'm thinking about Computing and everything around that, have a big gender gap. So even if male workers were not allowed to return to their jobs sooner, it's likely that more men are able to work from home. Which will further allow them to maintain a full-time/full-paid job, while women will see their daily workload decreased from all the restrictions.

Depends. In terms of work from home u got programmers which is more male dominated but u also got customer service or customer representative at call centres like my ex does which are female dominated. I think in that work from home aspect it's probably more equal

 

I think what's really hurting is the schools and day care closures since women disproportionately end up staying home with kids...

 

And the service sector. Anything to do with bar tenders, restaurant service, hair saloons, nail salons etc etc etc tends to be quite female dominated and those are the worst hit industries of all

I would've expected the opposite due to most male work being traditionally labour intensive. But actually, childcare and hospitality are massively effected. Luckily it should bounce back at a steady pace, I don't think it'll be as disasterous long term as the 2008 recession.

Some of these female-orientated jobs are going to function again with lots of safety measures in place. In hairdressers and beauticians, for example, masks and gloves will be given to customers upon arrival and they'll be worn by staff. There will be chairs removed to provide bigger gaps between each other and stations will be cleaned after every transaction. Some of them said, if the government requires it, they'll dress in full PPE. Many food establishments are doing drive-thru and takeaways only right now. And retail isn't as female-dominated as you might think, unless we're talking about perfume and make up outlets, of course. There's also high demand for a work from home option to available across as many businesses as possible where there wasn't before, there's petitions and bills hoping to go through supporting it.

But naturally, in this time in limbo, women are perhaps staying at home to look after children if it comes down to choosing which one of you goes back to work if both are offered the chance, that was always going to happen. It's a cycle we'll have to get through like any other.

True many types of retail have a lot of men too

 

But I know the service sector as a whole across the board has more women than men and the service sector has been especially hard hit by covid which is one of the reasons women are being harder hit with job losses right now

 

The child care is an issue on top of that
