I do think it's an overreaction if it's simply due to the protests and I'm also a WOC...but I sort of get it. It's not a popular thing to say, but any f*cking thing can get you dragged nowadays (obviously, racism is being called out tho). Some are being dragged for saying too little, some are being dragged for saying too much—public life is just a minefield rn. Like the Emma Watson thing was f*cking ridiculous...maybe it was performative but the fact she was a trending topic for hours was insane. There are plenty of people speaking out on racism and she's spoken out already on social media about racism multiple times—her voice isn't needed tbh and I don't blame her for not wanting to make herself a target. I agree with you about every damn thing getting people dragged even when someone is well-intentioned. I feel like Gaga is firmly in the list of people that some are literally sitting waiting to drag. It goes so rapidly from “How dare this woman with such a voice and a huge platform stay quiet?!” to “How dare this privileged white woman think she can speak about oppression?!” that it’s a wonder she ever bothers at all. Thank God she’s always passionate enough to speak up, and the fact she doesn’t rush to make a statement (which also gets her dragged...) until she’s done her research and decided on the most helpful way to respond is definitely a good thing.
