ShadowHunter 866
To people saying this isnt action, this is action. These are real people in real time. And to those who this message was being spoken to, it meant a lot, they needed this recognition. Recognition my friends is action. I’ve been doing a lot of work on my own biases and speaking to close friends about this, it takes a huge load off ur back to admit to ur own faults so that we (non-black people) can begin a process of unlearning
Guest
People are criticizing this specific group of people and saying "they don't need apologies, they need to change" -- but the people who are doing this are NOT the ones who are causing this oppression and racism. The people who are doing this are the allies who are in support of the movement. They don't need to change.

The change was meant for the whole country, the system and everything what is wrong with it, not to those people in the video.

Knife 7,081
The cynic in me sees this as a hollow "viral moment." Sorry, but I don't care for these theatrics designed to make these white people feel a little less guilty about turning a blind eye when black people have been routinely and unjustly killed by the police while in custody. PhantomOfTheDance 13,795
as a white person, i don't need to apologize for others. i don't even need to apologize for myself. i'm not racist. the people who should be apologizing are the ones who act on their racism and hurt others. you can be racist, homophobic, or sexist, but don't act on it. The people who are doing this are the allies who are in support of the movement. They don't need to change. I think this is a misperception, as someone who isn’t overtly racist, have never been, and was brought up appreciating black artistry, black music, I can admit to some biases towards black men. It has nothing to do with the fact that I have black friends, it has to do with those little instances, walking on the streets of Brooklyn at night and seeing a group of black men on the street and crossing to the other side, (class issues being very prevalent in these situations too) I have been guilty of this. This kind of recognition is important so I can begin changing. And I have to set aside the biases I have been victim of (being Jewish, latino and gay) because they do not erase my own biases towards other race and religious groups. Before I would, and still am to some degree, hesitant of labelling anything black. Because I think in itself it admits that we speak of art as excluding black artists and black art as comprehending work created by black artists, but many black artists dismiss this label, and rightfully so. I just feel like I agree with them, but I also need to become more appreciate, more empathetic, more active. This is not an easy conversation, I hope I’m coming through with what I am saying. It comes from a sort of effort.
Queen Bitch 10,513
The ones who should apologize and beg for forgiveness are the ones who are actually racist. But you can see how much it meant for them, so I can't really have a problem with it.

Well any undercover racists right now who turn a blind eye and don’t hold their outwardly racist counterparts accountable should absolutely be sorry for being complicit, among other things. And nothing wrong with non-racist whites holding themselves accountable for a system they also have a responsibility to fix.

Wouldn’t have come to this is people hadn’t sat at home and said “Well I didn’t get the nominee I wanted so I’m not voting”. The politically apathy reeks from the Bernie protest voters I got drunk
