That said, I do get the sense that they made some decisions about song length for purely commercial reasons, like how they apparently shortened Free Woman by thirty seconds for no otherwise discernible reason or how the two hotly anticipated collabs (i.e. likely to be singles) are on the very short end. If they think the songs are better short, that's fine - but if they're taking a hatchet to the songs just to make them more streamable, then I can understand why people think that could come at the expense of artistry or, hell, just giving us more good music to listen to. I don't care enough about the charts to think that's a worthy trade-off  

They didn't shorten Free Woman for no reason. Most of the demo, like said above is her screaming fREEeeEEEeeEeEeE WoMANNnnnNnnnnn" for thirty seconds. It deserved to be cut.

I agree that it will less likely get as much views as shorter videos but that doesn't mean a waste of budget, imo

Maybe. But we also live in a world where options for consumption are seemingly endless yet our attention spans are not. One of the advantages of shorter songs in the streaming era is that they're punchy enough to get a whole play.

Everyone do yourself a favor and look at the lengths of all the tracks on The Fame. 2 songs are below 3 minutes, 4 songs are above 4 minutes, and the rest are in between.
 

It literally doesn’t matter because at the end of the day you remember the hook, not the length. It’s going to be just fine lol.
