Starting this summer across parts of United States, cicadas will emerge from their 17 years underground to engage in a two-week fest of calling, mating, laying eggs and then dying.

The insects are expected to swarm out in parts of two US States: Virginia and North Carolina.

The last time this brood of cicadas emerged was in 2003 and 2004, though some areas saw the emergence of a different brood in 2013.

Periodical cicadas have the longest lifespan of any insects found on earth. They live in soil and feed on roots, coming out once in 13 or 17-year gaps. This year's Brood IX will be coming out of the ground after 17 years to mate.

While the lenghty cycle of these insects still remains a mystery, entomologists believe the huge gap could a way to avoid meeting predators.

Thank goodness I'm not in a part of the country where this'll be happening. I've been lucky in avoiding the cicada broods thus far.

I'm worse with centipedes than spiders tho

Spiders if they are not overly huge and thick they don't totally terrify me (although I still don't like them)

But centipedes literally make me freeze and almost crap my pants :deadbanana:

I can at least kill most spiders with a mild to moderate degree of anxiety. Centipedes on the otherhand I have to get my parents to kill them (cuz my brothers and sisters won't either) :enigma:

theyre usually harmless, i've never been bitten. i've always found spiders cute (not tarantulas tho, theyre gnarly). I love little furry spiders with their big eyes and stubby little front legs
