NFRatwell 23,290
Hm. I think I really stated stanning her because she was such an interesting artist, and she had already 4 albums which were all pretty different and diverse between each other. If she just started her music career in 2016 with Joanne, I don’t think I would’ve started listening to her. But if we had Joanne instead of TF, and I heard ARTPOP when I did, I’d probably stan her even more.
Economy 49,934
No And we probably wouldn't know her either cuz it's doubtful she'd be famous

LaLa 19,663
Would I have liked the songs on Joanne if I'd heard them in 2008/2009? Yeah, absolutely. But Gaga would have been like... an entirely different person then. Following her career was so exciting at the beginning, and I think if her trajectory was so wildly different I probably wouldn't have stanned her. But if she became very popular anyway, and had still done all her advocacy around LGBT issues and mental health and was the inspirational person she is today, I'm sure I would have come to love her eventually. (I'm thinking of someone like Maggie Rogers, where I really love her debut album and listen to it a lot, but don't know when her birthday is, for example)
Guest
She'd probably have been currently grouped in with Florence, Marina, Lana, Lorde, etc. group of more alternative female singers if Joanne was her debut. I would have found her, and I would have followed her.
OMF 3,481
Yep. Joanne is a great album and still serves some good bops.

Prostitute Barbie 4,077
I like Joanne and appreciate it for what it is but I was 20 when it came out. When she first became famous I was only 12 and never would have been interested in her if that was her first album
joannesrats 26
No, we wouldn't have known about it as it wouldn't have been a popular album. Also, the only reason why Joanne was seen as a captivating album is because it came from Gaga. In reality, Joanne was the weirdest thing Gaga could possibly do. imnotyourbabe10 6,101
Not sure. Didn't start stanning until Alejandro and DIC is the closest sounding to Alejandro ... so perhaps. But I'm uncertain if Joanne would have put her on my radar quite like JD, LG and BR did in 2008-09.

Hybrid AT 78
Interesting thought experiment Maybe? There's no way to know that though Like, I probably wouldn't stan her as quickly as I did when I first heard PF back in 2009. I went down a rabbit hole to discover her artist and kept falling in love with her. With Joanne, I wouldn't become a quick stan but I definitely would be intrigued. Besides her costumes, wigs, exaggerated concepts and shock art, what really drew me to her was her sheer talent. And her passion and emotion she would put in every performance. If I saw these then I surely would try to want to know more about her: If she gave such performances back then and somehow managed to blow up in that pop environment of late 2000s, she'd definitely have my interest. I didn't become a fan of Lady Gaga the popstar, I became a fan and will always be a fan of Lady Gaga the artist. It's the things she stands for, singing every single lyric in her performances and not lip-syncing, being compassionate, her message to accept yourself the way you are. Those are the things that matter at the end of the day and that I care about and love her the most for They were true then when she began her career and they're still true now. There is nothing average about her vocals on Joanne and as for 'forgettable songs' that is your very subjective opinion. Anyway, maybe I wouldn't have stanned as hard right from the start but if I found out about her I would definitely have liked the music.

This is a ridiculous thing to say. There's nothing average about her. She was born to break out and make her own space. When she blasted on to the scene there was nobody like her and she was seen as a pop oddity. But she hustled hard for her place and made every single eyeball that looked at her pay attention to her voice and her talent. Besides, Joanne has songs that are memorable not forgettable. Just because it isn't your taste doesn't mean the album is bad. It's a solid album. "I was protected by the monks of Azarath, I was raised by my friends.
