Dutch 95,665 Posted May 14, 2020 Share Posted May 14, 2020 Well, some countries may be high on the list for their laws (which is great), but that doesn’t mean they are the best countries to live in as a LGBTQ+ person. I don’t want to bash any of these countries, but some of these have people in their country that are less openminded than their laws are and vice versa. Yes, because Montenegro has a pretty new constitution that guarantees human rights to LGBTI+ people in terms of education, employment, healthcare (meaning that you cannot legally refused from jobs, health insurance, school etc. because of your sexual orientation or gender idendity). If you look through the raw stats, the laws in place to protect LGBTI+ people are pretty progressive, but appearently are way ahead of its general population (which is also noted in this wikipedia article). Discrimination still happens very frequently and goes unreported because of the lacking acceptance from the general public. And I think this should also be a reminder that this ranking is just compiling laws & legalities, but is not reflective of what your actual life could be like as an LGBTI+ person in that country. It also should be noted that the LGBTI+ protections in place in Montenegro were passed because it was a requirement to join the EU, not because of activism or social change happening.
