UK in lockdown chaos as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland reject new ‘stay alert’ slogan

But devolved governments in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have power to make their own decisions on a number of matters, including health.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who said she had first heard of the slogan in the Sunday newspapers, said that the "clear message" to Scotland was still to “stay home" due to "the critical point we are at". 

She tweeted: “The Sunday papers is the first I’ve seen of the PM’s new slogan.

“It is of course for him to decide what’s most appropriate for England, but given the critical point we are at in tackling the virus, #StayHomeSaveLives remains my clear message to Scotland at this stage.”

She later doubled down on the message, tweeting: "STAY HOME. PROTECT THE NHS. SAVE LIVES."

Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford, who described the Welsh Government’s relationship with the UK Government as one of “fits and starts”, stressed the stay at home slogan had not “gone away” in Wales.

He was backed by the country’s health minister Vaughan Gething who said there had been no discussion or agreement about the Government’s new slogan with the other three nations of the UK.
He added: “The fewer contacts you have with other people, the more you suppress your own risk and the risk to others. So being alert is important but staying at home has not gone away.”

First Minister Arlene Foster said the region is also sticking with the “stay home, save lives” message.

With official figures suggesting that the UK death toll has passed 36,500, Mr Johnson acknowledged “this is the dangerous bit” ahead of his 7pm pre-recorded announcement.

But the PM hopes to restart the economy by encouraging people back to work while maintaining social-distancing rules.

Online there has been a lot of anger relating to the new 'Stay Alert' slogan and BorisHasFailed is now trending on twitter

'stay alert' is the worst piece of advice ever. tf does it even mean? am i supposed to go around with a microscope looking for viruses? there's absolutely no implication of what the government actually wants us to do. stay at home was a clear instruction, stay alert is not.

As we should. Its disgraceful the advice from the UK Government... thank god Nicola has sense. The only ease in lockdown is the change to exercise... from tomorrow, we are allowed to go out for exercise more than once

People are already policing each other. I think the stay alert slogan is to encourage them to continue with doing that.

Unpopular opinion but it's annoying to see people acting like they all of a sudden lost some brain cells and can't, for the life of them, understand such basic sentiment as 'stay alert'.

Now do not get me wrong, it is much more unclear than 'stay at home' we can all agree that's pretty clear. What they are trying to do is change their tone, because they are clearly planning on easing restrictions. And that is a different issue on it's own. 

But having people act like they lost the ability to speak English all of a sudden?  

I believe those people who are looking for any excuse to be outraged.

The new 'Stay Alert' guidance is ****ing terrible + problematic. People will now go out more now. He's ****ed it. I'm with Scotland, Wales + NI.

No. What will happen is the GP will take the utter piss, even more so than they did in full lockdown mode, and will now go out more. Bookmark me. It's all in the wording. This new phrase will gain traction in the media - watch people disobey rules now

I don't see that... I think the "stay alert" message is so vague. Its pretty confusing actually, and the thing is, people will take advantage of that. Because its so vague, people will take this as a sign to hang out more often, have more social gatherings etc etc and I think it will cause another spike in numbers... I HOPE that its not the case, but the only way to ensure that it doesn't is to be absolutely straight with people. Also, the rates of "the curve" is different in every part of the UK and what might be true in England might not be in Wales for example. We are at different rates and Boris hasn't taken account for that. It MIGHT be okay for England to ease lockdown, but its not in Scotland.

Tbh, my two best friends have been meeting each other every day, to drive around, go places. Sniff some cocaine, you name it. Fallen out with them over their selfishness recently (especially since I had COVID-19 3 weeks ago & have opened several doors for stretchers of body bagged patients in my hospital) & I'm honestly so close to just telling the police 'bout it, or posting the screen records of snapchats they sent me of them having fun together. This 'Stay Alert' guidance will make people go out more. We may headed to a second peak

The GP is dumb though. They need basic words in order to understand. I've seen alot of confusion on Facebook for example about why they can go get diy supplies if a fence breaks but can't go out to buy paint to do up the kitchen. They don't get what it means.

True. Because the words are vague. Be alert is like saying be vigilant. Be vigilant of what?... Each other. 

And the belief will be we're allowed out because we're watching out for people in groups. It's like an us and them mentality and we're not in it together anymore.

Exactly people will take advantage of that and have more gatherings and it will be ok because they are "being alert". It doesn't really mean anything.

I think lockdown should continue as it is.
