Asteroid The Size Of A Truck Flew The Closest To Earth On May 4th 2020

A previously unseen asteroid the size of a truck flew about 4,350 miles (7,000 kilometers) over the Pacific Ocean on Monday, making it one of the closest passes by our planet on record. 

Astronomers had no notice of asteroid 2020 JJ's existence, as it was discovered using the Mt. Lemmon Survey in Arizona right around the time it reached its closest point to us. 

No one saw it coming until it was right on top of us. More like above us, actually.

NASA keeps an online database of close approaches by asteroids and other "near-Earth objects" going back to 1900, and 2020 JJ comes in as the sixth closest approach ever recorded. It should be noted that the top 10 close approaches have all come since 2004. This isn't because asteroids started attacking us in the 21st century. Rather, it says something about how astronomers and their technology are becoming better at spotting ever-smaller and closer asteroids.

"Asteroid 2020 JJ is estimated to be between nine and 20 feet (2.7 to 6 meters) across, making it a pretty puny little hunk of space junk."

"Had 2020 JJ actually struck Earth, most of it probably would have burned up in the atmosphere."

This particular asteroid probably wouldn't have been able to cause much damage since it would've been burned up in the atmosphere. In fact, even the "Chelyabinsk meteor" (which may have actually been larger measuring at about 66ft in diameter; weighing around 13,000 tons) was nearly disintegrated from an explosion after making contact with a thicker part of the atmosphere. Although,the explosion actually caused quite a bit of damage to the surrounding buildings and injured 1,491 people.

"Due to its high velocity and shallow angle of atmospheric entry, the object exploded in an air burst over Chelyabinsk Oblast, at a height of around 29.7 km (18.5 mi; 97,000 ft). The explosion generated a bright flash, producing a hot cloud of dust and gas that penetrated to 26.2 km (16.3 mi), and many surviving small fragmentary meteorites, as well as a large shock wave. The bulk of the object's energy was absorbed by the atmosphere, with a total kinetic energy before atmospheric impact estimated from infrasound and seismic measurements to be equivalent to the blast yield of 400–500 kilotons of TNT (about 1.4–1.8 PJ) range – 26 to 33 times as much energy as that released from the atomic bomb detonated at Hiroshima."

Not even. A rock the size of a truck could do some damage, sure, but it'd have to hit somewhere populated.

The one that put the final nail in the coffin for the dinosaurs was 6 miles wide and if they weren't already on the way to extinction in an already changing climate,they might have survived it.
