1 in 5 US Children Don't Have Enough To Eat

Research released Wednesday shows a rise in food insecurity without modern precedent. Nearly a fifth of young children are not getting enough to eat, according to surveys of their mothers by the Brookings Institution. The rate is three times higher than in 2008, at the worst of the Great Recession, reports Jason DeParle.

“This is alarming,” Ms. Bauer said. “These are households cutting back on portion sizes, having kids skip meals. The numbers are much higher than I expected.”

Ms. Bauer said disruptions in school meal programs might be part of the problem, with some families unable to reach distribution sites and older siblings at home competing for limited food.

The findings come as Democrats and Republicans are at odds over proposals to raise food stamp benefits. Democrats want to increase benefits by 15 percent for the duration of the economic downturn, arguing that a similar move in 2009 reduced hunger during the Great Recession. Congress has enacted a short-term increase for about 60 percent of the caseload, but the increase omits the poorest recipients. Citing large expansions of other safety-net programs, Republicans say that is sufficient to meet rising needs.

Don't even come at me. I’m sorry but people are dying of literally anything rn and hospitals are labeling them as Corona deaths because they get more money, that immediately skews the numbers let alone any other BS that’s probably going on that we don’t really know about. Not to mention that these social distancing guidelines (SOME of which are certainly necessary) did indeed flatten the curve which is now being used as reason to extend lockdowns and closures? Or the fact that I can go to McDonald’s to get a McChicken but I can’t go to the DMV to renew my license (and no I’m not doing that sh*t online)? We’re not allowed to see our friends but Lowe’s can have a full parking lot? What was the point then? We faced mass death and economic downturn no matter what, it just seems like this was all chosen to be done in a specific, fishy, very ineffective way

Also notice how a thread about a serious repercussion of this lockdown is nearly radio silent but any thread about how bad the death toll is, what Trump said today that hurt someone’s feelings, or about Obama donating millions of dollars to the Wuhan lab, would be trending faster than you can say Ferrari 

OT - My heart goes out to any kid who is hungry right now, it’s a crippling, heartbreaking feeling imagining a child being scared, confused, separated from friends, and now...hungry

one thing i have never understood is why we've been allowed to go to Costco at will, were we touch the same things/surfaces as thousands of strangers with no way of contact tracing--but we cannot go to our offices or classrooms, where if one of our colleagues comes down with COVID-19 we will know EXACTLY who they were in contact with in their place of work/school and reach out to those people and ask them to quarantine

this is one of the most absurd "conspiracy theories" i've ever heard. Wuhan has the most labs per capita in the world i think, all of them working on different things to understand flus, illnesses, vaccines, and healthcare to a better extent. I'd be worried if people weren't supporting Wuhan's labs.

YES YES YES. I certainly think anyone would be ignorant to think that nothing should have been done, but there’s definitely LOTS of issues with what’s been allowed to stay open and still occur versus what’s not

I guess I was just trying to say people are quick to attack or praise certain meaningless threads or headlines if it fits their own agendas but this is TRAGIC and it’s basically radio silent

I may be a cynic, but I honestly believe the only reasons these whacky "social distancing measures" have been implemented is to give a false sense of security so people don't lose faith in our govt or panic over the media's panic p*rn of "deadly virus will kill us all" cycle. 

we've already seen from NYC that way more than the number "confirmed cases" actually existed between January and April, and the majority (99.22%) of those cases recovered 

In short, I don't believe theres any "big conspiracy" or "world order implementation by Bill Gates and Dr. Fauci" happening here. Its just a bunch of politicians having no clue what to do and shooting in the dark in an effort to keep the people calm.
