Judas Was Released As A Single Because...

I think her label was trying to create her "Like a Prayer" moment by using religious controversy combined with a catchy song . And she and Redone deliberately tried to recreate the BR formula sound wise hoping that it would replicate its success. It didn't work obviously which is unfortunate bc it is one of her best songs and videos.

A calculated move that backfired I think more from the label.

BTW even with six weeks at number 1 still didn’t perform as well as a lead single for one of the most hyped albums EVER. You can check the billboard year-ends for that and its chart performance in other countries. I think the label was aware of that even before the song’s release. It was a “statement single” something that Gaga could afford to do at that point, and it was naturally the right choice. It was a legacy solidifying song. It’s somehow similar to how Reputation got LWYMMD as the lead.

With BTW as the lead, the second single should be something more formulaic, to make sure it will carry the album hype as it is nearer to the street date. So they decided with Judas. I think they miscalculated the whole controversy aspect of it. They thought they would benefit from it like Madonna with LAP. The problem was that less than a year before that Gaga had the backlash with Alejandro. It was still fresh from the mind of the gp and at that point Judas seemed like a contrived attempt to recreate the buzz that Alejandro had but instead of helping with the sales it nailed the end of her imperial phase. Funny enough that the cracks started to appear during Alejandro.

I would’ve went with Scheisse, but at that point in time radio was a big factor. As much as we the fans love it the label wasn’t probably sure that it’ll be radio-friendly. They might’ve thought that it was too convoluted and that you have to be into Gaga to get it. Weirdly enough, my gp friends liked it from the get go so it was a missed opportunity.

It was really fun to be a fan that time, but I guess with what Gaga was at that time and the hype, there’s no other way but down.

I do agree that Judas sounds like a classic Gaga track but (in my opinion) it's a pale and cheap copy of Bad Romance  :ohwell:

if they wanted the Red One sound I still don't understand how they didn't release Scheisse which is BY FAR superior

The fans' reaction is never a factor in Gaga's career choices.

Didn't she switch the 2nd single to Million Reasons and DWUW because of the stronger reception those songs received from fans???

also for completely ruining any chance the subsequent singles had to go #1. It is without a doubt her worst single. If Judas wasn't released, TEOG could've been #1. Also, as far as I remember, Gaga actually Scheiße as a single but her label cut that short. So yeah.

I think TEOG not going #1 was just bad luck and if anything had more to do with the weak MV (back when mv really helped with a song's popularity), than with Judas being released before it. I also don't remember her performing the song much in America. Had it been the 2nd single it probably would have gone #1 cause it was riding off of BTW but in that case it is the order of the singles that are at fault, not Judas itself imo.

I would have loved scheibe as a single but for all we know she could have faced just as much backlash from that song as with Judas. I highly doubt radios would play a song called sh*t and Germany would be left shook and not necessarily in a good way.

Judas is perfect. The song, the single cover!!! Iconic! The music video, the costumes, the choreo. Who cares the charts? It was a mini era with Quality.

Agreed! It would set the bar too high for other songs + has to fit the vibe of the album.

Can you imagine if Dancin in Circles was the lead of Joanne?

I mean I wish :lolly:
