NYT: Study finds "fatality rate of COVID19 resembling that of seasonal flu"

The reason for much more damage from Coronavirus vs. seasonal influenza is that the former can attack potentially everyone at once because none of our immune systems have seen anything like it before. It can spread more quickly because it is far more contagious than seasonal flu, with latest estimates being that each person with CoV-2 can infect nearly 6 others.

Flu can’t spread as rapidly, because so many of us have had years of prior exposures and vaccinations, making for immunity in the population to varying degrees that block a sudden, overwhelming explosion of cases.

Also, drawing the conclusion that the fatality rate resembles that of a seasonal flu is puzzling. The surge in serious illnesses and deaths that hospitals in New York City and elsewhere are witnessing clearly does not happen every year, and that is despite unprecedented mitigation measures.

This virus is obviously unusually dangerous.

U are mostly using worst case scenarios situations.

Most viruses start with high spread. So even without social distancing measures, which should continue to exist in the next months until we learn more about the virus, I dont think that your rate of transmission is possible. I think that not even in Wuhan it was as high as you say.

What you say about immunity is true, but again that happens only if for some reason tomorrow we will start acting like we did in november 2019. It wont happen.

What it is true in California, maybe it isnt true in NY. We dont know a lot about the virus. We should ask for more studies, not minimize a study that doesnt agree with our ideas about the virus. We should look for the truth.

No one is minimizing this, but there are people like you who made out of this something that it isnt and now that there are more and more evidence that this isnt what you / we believe it is, u dont want to back down, look at the data, accept the evidence and make a new plan.

How was anything that user said wrong? What are they supposed to back down on? Which one of their points was wrong? You keep saying 'look at the data' but users have provided the data you did not provide btw, for you, and you still dug in your heels preaching 'oh where are the people who say don't compare it to the flue' - how about you take your own advice and accept the evidence - you clearly haven't

As if the stats alone show lack of comparison, do you want to go deeper and talk about the way the virus functions and how it's structurally different? I doubt it, seeing how you keep going off on people who came with the data and rightfully called you out :laughga:

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

No, I’m using scientific facts that we have from this virus so far.

We don’t know what will happen with immunity and this virus. Scientists still don’t know if you can get the virus again after you have already had it. There are still more questions than there are answers.

There could be different strains of the virus. Pollution, humidity, or even the race of people effected can all be contributing factors. Also, many deaths from Coronavirus are not getting reported as such. Many people are dying in their homes (or even on the streets) from heart conditions, etc. that were worsened ten-fold by the Coronavirus.

None of the statistics are perfect. There are still more questions than there are answers. One thing is certain, this is the first time that society as a whole has been shut down, and the Coronavirus is still far contagious and far more deadly than the flu.

This virus is obviously unusually dangerous.

You are using worst case scenarios situations of some scientific data. That worst case scenario situation with rate of transmission didnt happened anywhere in the world until now, from what I know, no matter the measures taken.

Yes, there are many possibilities, but again you are talking about worst worst worst case scenarios. Until now, the victims of covid are similar all over the world.

Why dont u take in consideration the possibility that the lockdowns are keeping the virus strong? Some scientists talk about it, but u clearly are interested only in some kind of data.

Depends what FAR means to you when you say " far contagious and far more deadly". This study says that you arent right with the mortality rate. There are similar studies made in Germany, Sweden and Island. So again : there is more evidence you are wrong.

Every virus is dangerous. Fighting then without balance also makes the world more dangerous.

Where I've said he is wrong? Cant find it in my comment.:what:

U make a lot of assumptions. :lmao:

The data is there and the concerns should be studied, but for people like him and u - it will make any difference? That's the question.

Just look at the way you choose to ignore a study. It's embarrassing. Just like the "dont compare it with the flu" hysteria, which was the point of my comment. With what should the scientists compare it, if not with the flu? And if the scientists compare it with the flu, why regular people cant do it? :ladyhaha:

I'm sorry.

I'm usually one of the nicest people on this forum but I frankly think that the message you are spreading is dangerous and extremely irresponsible and thus I will be merciless in my rebuke.

"People like me????" "making it out to be something that it isn't is???" Gurl BYE

You need to back down, look at the data, accept the evidence and stop insinuating that everyone is overexagerating.

The facts are:

It is a new disease that is killing tons of people and that has the potential to kill many more if we don't control it.

It has no vaccine and we don't know how to fight it (unlike the flu)

It is twice as contagious as the flu

etc etc.

I dare you to tell the nurses, doctors and physicians on the frontline that the hell that they are living right now, colleagues dying, truckloads of bodies being hauled out every day. working 20 hour shifts that they need to " back down, look at the data, accept the evidence and make a new plan"

Sit your sanctimonious self down and read a book.

Don't even bother responding anymore, I just read all of his comments and its becoming obvious they are or a troll or too stubborn to ever listen or probably both.

All we are doing by responding is giving him more of a platform by making this thread trend higher.

Frankly I even think it should be locked

Same here. I’ve been braving the world and the one going to the grocery stores still when we were stocking up. A few weekends ago J had a severe tightening in my chest and shortness of breath especially at night. Lasted a good 4 days. I’ve been loading up on vitamins and hot drinks like green tea with gingemere. The challenge with antibody testing is determining how long they remain in your system :ohno:

Wait what?! With those symptoms you were suppose to go and get tested! It checks off what they were looking for to give out a test. You just suffered thru it?!

I never said that your other concerns arent true. Based on the data we have, those concerns are legitimate.

The problem with you is that you cant accept a study that can be considered good news just because it "sends the wrong message"?

Wtf? We need the truth, not messages.

So u read all the comments, you weren't able to combat any single one of them and then call me names to other people? That's all u can do?

What can I say? I'm not surprised u are a science denier. :classy:

No one is denying science darling.

What I am denying are the suggestions you are making that this somehow means that it isn't a crisis anymore.

Countless people presented you the facts throughout this whole thread yet you can't be bothered to respond in a way that doesn't minimize the crisis or demean what they are saying.

Also who the hell do you think you are calling me a science denier? My father is an epidemiologist.

I am not saying the article isnt true. All I am saying is that the article changes nothing to the scope of the tragedy we are facing.

This is the last response I will give you. I hope you get a grip
